Taking Keppra after craniotomy for meningioma

Posted by Bob Forsyth on January 16, 2016, at 18:51:37

I had a seizure and collapsed. They found a brain tumour in the hospital. I had surgery to remove a benign meningioma from the frontal lobe. The operation was ten weeks ago. I am taking 500mg Keppra twice daily. How long will I have to continue taking this for ? I do not have epilepsy.

Bob, the subject is clearly discussed in the medical literature, so I'm quite comfortable in giving you a summary of what I read.

After the type of surgery that you had, 31% of patients have one or more seizures. 9 out of 10 post-craniotomy patients are protected by taking Keppra. But your tumour was discovered because you had a seizure. Epilepsy is not the issue here.

There is a serious increased risk for complications arising from post-surgical seizure activity, which could set you back in other ways.

This is preventive treatment, termed prophylaxis. You won't know about the seizure you didn't have.

I suspect that you'll be taken off the drug after they're certain that you've healed completely from the surgery.

Regards,
Lar
