i read that combining lithium and valporate (depakote) is highly successful for treating mood fluctations, and mania......lamotragine can be used for depression side, valporate is more for the manic phase, and lithium is good for both mania and depression, yet lamotragine has slightly higher improvement rates in depression phase

The more recent recommendations are to combine Lamictal with lithium.
