Do most people find find that they have to start on 12.5 of Lamotriine and stay on that for 2 weeks before going up to 25 because of the risk of rash and then 25mg for 2 weeks before 50mg. just a question out of curiousity. I know Lamotrigine is the relatively new gold standard in mood stabilisation showing some impressive results. Shame you have to tiltrate it though.

that's considered the "causious" way to start lamictal, i started with 25mg, then 50mg next two weeks all the way up to 400mg but i went down because i was too stablized
i take 200mg now, its good for depression and some mood swings
400mg and above is more reinforcing mood stablization and treating siezures
lamotragine is stabilizer with antidepressant properties, comared to others....it's one that paticulary treats depression besides lithium

I've always started with 25. Also before the drug was generic the sample starter kits the pharm co gave out started at 25mg.
Starting at 12.5 would def be conservative. IMHO thatd be the way to go if you tried titrating previously w 25, to 50, to 100 but had a potential rash. Usually if you get a (or the) rash and you stop and retey the medication later titrating slower you will be OK.
Trust you doc though if he/she wants to go 12.5 first....

One thing to note though if you are taking Depakote you only need to take half the normal dose of lamictal since it slows the breakdown. So if you're taking Depakote 12.5 would be the normal starting dose. I remember the starter kits stressing that a few times on the box...

I think the scare stories when lamotrigine first came out about the severity of the rash if you didnt tiltrate scared people but now its calmed down. I was reading old literature.pb

The standard starting dose is 25mg...I suppose if one is super sensitive to meds you could start lower, but it would make the titration period longer than it already is!

Changing the subject slightly but isnt there a point with lamotrigine that youve got enough of the stuff in your system that you dont need to tiltrate anymore and can rapidly go to your desired dose straighit away i.e say youve tiltratred to 75mg can you then go to 200 or 400 as desired. correct me if im wrong but what is the point at which tiltration stops and you can swifttly move to any dose you like or is it a case of tiltration all the way to 600mg if necessary. feedback would be much appreciated.pb

I think i found the answer to my own question but some people may be more canny and know more than what is said in the lamotriine prescribing information, It says 25 mg every other day weeks one and two , weeks 3 and 4 25-50 mg for 1-2 weeks then a mainteance dose of 100-400mg so that marker i was after in my previous post must be 50 mg if after 50mg you can go to a maintenance dose of 100-400 daily. pb
