increasing quetiapine (Seroquel) for unipolar

Posted by Escapee on December 18, 2015, at 19:32:39

I want to increase my quetiapine. I'm on 250mg with an MAOI and other stuff. So I'm taking it as an Augmenter. Diagnosis is Major depression (uni-polar)/TRD. Social phobia too.
I'm mainly after anecdotes tho any comments are good.
I have a friend with bipolar. Daily, he takes 600-800mg slow-release quetiapine (not sure if anything else, except pot).
Now for me. Could such higher doses benefit me? I do find the occasional extra, taken during the day easily tolerable, but thats just 150mg in the morning. Rest at bedtime with amitriptyline which, if i do try larger doses of quetiapine my doc might lower my amitriptyline to 100mg. He is very cautious when is comes to a toxic hammering of contraindications which metabolize via the urinary tract as my diabetes (type 1) puts its own batter-ram to that particular area. Still, I do take a collection of supplement which gently support the urinary tract, antioxidants and chelating minerals..
So there you go. what should i expect doubling to 500mg slow-release or even higher? I'm aware quetiapine can work wonders for people with uni-polar/TRD even on its own.
What side effects should i expect and will i still have to wait long? Or will it need to build its stronger effect.
SIDE EFFECTS. I know there must be some. Short term I'm not too bothered about. They usually fade away. Its the long term effect I'm worried about. just a little. Only coz its an anti-psychotic and I know many anti-psychotics develop serious long term side effects. What are my chances?
As I said I take it for uni-polar but comments from uni-polar or bi-polar sufferers are all welcome, so are Schizoid/schizophrenia sufferers too.
Just wanting a head start when I delve into this.

seroquel has been used for depression, i rerember when i was in rehab there was a lady on seroquel saying it helps her anxiety and mood, but my personal experience seroqeul is sedating and mind dulling, it can make thins feel peaceful and quiet in the mind, but it can blunt nuerotrasmitter trasnmission

like zyprexa is used for treatment resistant cases usally with prozac, maybe there's some receptor's it hits and helps the mood

seroquel can help with moood, but my own opinion it's sedating, can make a "boring calm"

but the best thing to do is ask to try it, start with the low dose before you start the extended release so it won't make you miserable being in your system too long

Thanks for the post. 'boring calm'. Sounds like clonazepam lol. wander if a 150mg dose of immediate release would be ideal taken before an event to numb alot of social anxiety (esp. negative-self-talk). Like your brain cant be bothered lol
Something to try.

Could help. I personally wouldn't take it w/ a TCA.

Old school AP drugs were used in depression, alone and in combo with other drugs. Problem is...they caused all kinds of problems, and mood disorder-ed people are more prone to side effects than psychosis people (supposedly).

there's a tardive dyskinesia risk. I wanna say that seroquel is on the low end of the AAP TD risk scale...above clozapine, but below most other options. It can happen, especially with long term use. Low potency AP/AAP drugs cause fewer EPS and TD.

AP/AAP drugs can also worsen or induce depression. I couldnt tolerate seroquel because it made me so sad. I now take Abilify at a high dose. It doesn't help the depression, but it doesn't make it worse, either.

I knew a woman on Seroquel and Adderall, and that combo made a huge difference in her life. Sort of like...how, back in the day, there were these combo pills...ThoraDex (yes, Thorazine and Dexedrine), or the one w/ Parnate and Stelazine (old school AP) in a fixed ratio. Treatment of depression isn't (thankfully) limited to "antidepressants."

I take an AAP and I also take loads of b vitamins and antioxidants, in the hopes of preventing TD. So far, so good...its been 5 years on a lot of Abilify, and I don't even have a tremor or stiff gait.

Good luck, and please keep us posted.
