Atrophic kidneydo I need to stop Lithium?

Posted by Sac on September 29, 2015, at 5:15:31

Hi,
I recently had an ultrasound done because I was experiencing unusual back pain especially on the left side. They said my left kidney is significantly smaller than the right kidney and referred me to a urologist. My blood work looks normal though. My concern is that I take Lithium (450 mgs/day) It is a low dose and I have been on it for over 10 years along with Prozac. My pdoc has expressed some concern about this but we do not have a plan yet to stop the Lithium. Do I need to stop Lithium if I am showing signs of kidney problems? What are the most effective alternatives to Lithium?? The lithium has been successful as a mild mood stabilizer and prevents depressive relapses for me although I have not been diagnosed with bipolar. Mostly my issue is mood cycling and major depressive relapses if I am not on a mood stabilizer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It depends on the kind of kidney problems you have. An internist would be better able to tell you.

There are a few mood stabilizers: Drpakote, tegretol, trileptal, lamictal. Lamictal works the best for depression.
