Ketoconazole, the active ingrediente in Nizoral shampoo, is thought to help with depression by inhibiting cortisol secretion by the adrenal glands. I don't know how effective it is for schizoid or other psychotic illnesses. I have no idea if Nazoral would be absorbed into the blood stream through the scalp so as to affect cortisol levels. Ketoconazole is available in oral form for the treatment of Cushing's Syndrome.

Ketaconazole can cause men to develop breasts. I found this out when my male poodle was put on it for possible Cushings disease. The Vets didn't know this at the time. Since he's off it now he still have severe hanging skin in the breast area. Phillipa

Scott found when googling the med for my pup. Sent the link to the Vet and she said human medicine is ahead of veterinarian Medication research. Glad this was helpful. Also didn't know that nizoril was a derivative of Ketoconazole. Thanks for this !!!!

Well there is no way to really guess what is going on here. But certainly the clues of your last 10 or 20 years point to your immune system as being closely tied to your mood. It appears anything that takes some of the burden away from the immune system, such as an antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral, it is helpful to your mood in varying degrees.
Nizoral is pretty potent stuff. I used to use that on chronic boils and it was about the only thing other than longterm antibiotics that was strongly effective. I had never heard of anyone using it that way and I am not suggesting it, just commenting.
