So I'd been on a low dose of Seroquel IR over the past 5 weeks (50mg) to help with my sleep and possibly anxiety. I recently complained to my pdoc that I was overly sedated on this dose and it was difficult to get going throughout the day, and also it didnt' seem to help much with my overall anxiety levels. Due to the low dose and short length of time I was on it, I was told to go ahead and discontinue. Always wary of discontinuation I dropped to 25mg for about 6 days and stopped it completely 2 nights ago. Well, last night I didn't sleep well at all (expected), today I feel quite nauseated (expected) and I've noticed a very significant uptick in my baseline anxiety levels (not expected). Is this normal? I actually feel worse than when I started it. Any input would be helpful.

I'd say its normal. On higher doses of AP/AAP drugs, some people who were never psychotic will get a psychosis upon taper/withdrawal of the medication. Crazy, huh?
50mgs is a low dose of Seroquel, but its densely sedating, so...yeah. I think this is normal.

Man and I was sold that this med was relatively safe with little to no withdrawal. Any idea how long it'll last?

5 weeks is long enough. Receptor reregulation can occur in as little as 2 weeks.
Perhaps the rebound anxiety is the result of the loss of 5-HT2a blockade.
Even low dosages of Seroquel are very antihistaminergic. You might possibly be experiencing a histaminergic rebound effect. My guess is that insomnia and anxiety would be the result. However, I have not found any precedents for this in the literature.
Good luck.

Thanks Scott. That actually makes a lot of sense as the anxiety I'm feeling is actually similar to the anxiety I feel when starting SSRI's. Correct me if I'm wrong but the SSRI's inhibit the reuptake of 5HT2a/c as well which is what causes it's stimulatory effects early on (agitation, insomnia, anxiety), correct? Outside of other atypicals, anything else that antagonizes this receptor (I think nefazodone as well, which I wrote of earlier)?
This is the end of the thread.
