Deep TMS - Any comments?

Posted by SLS on July 7, 2015, at 21:46:46

I am trying to decide which of the magnetic treatments to pursue. I read a recent study that claimed that deep TMS (dTMS) was closer to ECT in efficacy that was rTMS. Both treatments are approved by the FDA for depression.

Has anyone tried dTMS?

What information is available regarding dTMS?

Any opinions or comments?

Thanks.

I've come about as far as I can go with drug treatments. While they help me function better with more mental energy, I am left with significant:

1. Loss of interest in activities.
2. Loss of motivation.
3. Flat affect.
4. Loss of pleasure in activities.
5. Difficulty in initiating activities and completing them.
6. Apathy and passivity.
7. Cognitive slowing.
8. Memory impairments.
9. Difficulty making decisions.
10. Impaired concentration in reading.
11. Fatigue.
12. Reduced sex drive.
13. Reduced sex drive.
14. Reduced sex drive.

Hi Scott,

The whole list you've summed up matches my profile 100% !

I haven't tried dTMS, but did try rTMS a couple of years ago. After that, I seemed to be doing much better, especially motivation wise.

Nowadays, the only short lived pleasure I get is from masturbation (when I'm able to) and overindulgence, stuffing my face until it hurts & then feeling awful for failing my target, gaining weight, etc.

I think the solution could be setting (getting) a life purpose. But I don't know how. Psychotherapy has helped me understand the basis from which my problems arise, but it did not help me get a life goal.... So I just trudge along... and along... and along, hoping to stumble upon it... Maybe I would binge eat less often if I had a life purpose, but it so difficult to find one because nothing interests me... If I could lose 20 pounds maybe I would try harder at finding a partner. Or buy a pretty dress, but I don't cause I feel too fat. The vicious circle!!

The worst thing is, I've found 1 combination of supplements which improves my symptoms (Dhea 2,5 mg / Pregnenolone 10 mg & Boron 3 mg). Excellent for mood, motivation & libido, but it gives me weight gain! Catch 22 situation.

I'm trying to find psychotherapy directed at finding a life purpose, maybe that will be a better solution.

Good luck!

Maria

Scott some anti-infection and anti-toxin anti-inflammation herb combinations could be very helpful. Or at a very minimum, would solidly rule in or out that particular cause generating your symptoms. I just think that strategy has a great deal more potential, with far less risk, and if it worked it would be consistent with what is happening in the anecdotal world. Three months later, see how things are going, postpone any other treatments until after that?

My own experience suggests two substances for high reliability in improving your cluster of symptoms..Ritalin, Marijuana. MMJ being the better of the two. Most people who do well with the stimulants I think do so with Adderall. For me it was Ritalin. It was potent on the anhedonia brain fog cluster. I don't take it anymore. Better than both is the right strain of medical mj. Maybe consider that if you are in a legal State, or maybe research trying it as a test. Unlike meds, anhedonia drifts away in minutes instead of weeks or months. I'm just saying that because it is does not require the long time investment of meds, and that is a plus....the sooner we feel better. I could share some miracle stories on that plant from folks I have known...psychiatric miracles.

I believe the antidepressants are useless for your cluster of symptoms...just my opinion. I think they can help some symptoms, antipsychotics help a lot too, but both of them make those symptoms worse.

Hi Maria.

Thanks for responding.

How are you feeling right now?

I am unclear as to what positive effects rTMS had on you. Did they not last? Were you on any medication at the time? Had you considered maintenance treatments?

You do have quite a conundrum to deal with. However, it seems to me that you have good insight into yourself and your needs. You are good people.

I think you are right about having a life purpose.

"Life is its own purpose" works for me. All that is left is to have the energy, interest, and motivation to *discover* what it is that I wish to accomplish. Depression all but prevents one from doing this - at least that has been my experience.

What is the use in NOT binge eating if there are no other pleasures in life and no goals to strive for? I understand this.

I would like to write more here, but I need to get going. I'll be back.

Have you ever tried seeing a "life-coach"? I think they help you function better at taking care of yourself and helping you choose goals. Once a goal is decided upon, they help you learn how to achieve it. I think there is less psychotherapy that focuses on the past and more problem-solving in the present and putting together a plan for the future. Of course, you get to change your goals along the way.

Can you tell me more about Boron?

Sing it, brother! That is the Bible on antidepressant side effects right there. Nicely done. (But so sorry for your suffering, Scott. Hope whichever rTMS you choose has some (or many) positive benefits.)
