Qs about MAOIs for anybody who has taken them

Posted by Smoo on May 4, 2015, at 7:29:05

I'm writing a feature article on MAOIs, particularly Nardil, about its history and what it's like to be on and many MAOIs newer applications for other neurological diseases. It's for a journalism class for a university in Australia.

I was wondering if anybody would be willing to answer a few questions on here that they don't mind being quoted on? The article, if it's good enough, might be published. Hopefully :) You don't need to use your real name but if I could use your 'username' that would be great. Let me know if not. If it is published I'll put a post on here to let people know.

So! Here we go!
1. How long have you been/were you on your MAOI?
2. What illness do you have?
3. What was the worst side effect?
4. What dose were you on?
5. How long did it take to treat your illness?
6. Was it better/worse than a first line SSRI
7. Did you experiment or augment it with anything?
8. Did you find it hard to get prescribed?
9. How many drugs approx. were you on before trying a MAOI?
aaaaaand lastly
10. What kind of impact did it have on your life, socially, your relationships etc.?

I hope you can help. If you want to ask me any questions feel free.

Smoo

1. Fell into depression/anxiety 1977 after tours of S.E. Asia

2. Started as a panic attack. Went to ER and received a shot of Valium.

3. Within a week chronic anxiety/depression became the norm

4. Pdoc used benzos which were helpful until I required more and more.

5. I used all the tricyclics, major tranquilizers, lithium, and finally ECT

6. This timeframe was @ 2 yrs. My job was definitely at risk.

7. As to shame I hated people knowing I had ECT. At work my supervisor was knowledgeable of all my treatment.

8. If we had company I'd hide under the bed until they left. I was so miserable I asked my Pdoc for a lobotomy.

9. @ this time a read a book "Up from Depression"
The last chapter talked of MAOI's and Nardil in particular. I went to the library and read the PDR on Nardil. Scared the hell out of me!!!!

10. Finally started Nardil at 45mg and went to 90mg. Some hypertension, difficulty urinating, sex slowed way down.

11. @ eight wks. later I woke up and it was like a switch was turned on. OMG!!!! it was over. I moved from a negative point to @ 90%.
This was @ late 1980.

12. My maint dose was 60 mg/day for @ 23 yrs. I was able finish school and was promoted numerous times at the major co. I worked for.

13. @ 2004 I awoke and took my 60mg as normal. Several hours later I was suicidal. My wife went to the pharm and got a refill and things returned to "norm". Slowly I drifted back into the deep black hole. Eventually 2005 I lost my job and family. As you know the "so called" inactive ingredients were changed.

14. After that I tried all the SSRI's, SNRI's, Wellbutrin, and all others

15. Today I'm back on Nardil and search for different methods people are using to enhance the absorption. I'm at 30--50% which is tolerable but leaves one incapable of working/socializing

Kirkglen, why dont you try one of the other maoi's ? I have a similar story... I was on nardil from 1990 -2012, when it just stopped working. I tried increasing the dose etc.. tried different meds and nothing worked. Now, I am on Parnate. The effect is slightly different to Nardil - I dont get so high and energetic, but the depression has gone. I do have a feeling that these medications stop working after a while... and luckily there are other maois still on the market.

Had a very damaging impact in my life.

Caused psychosis and addiction. Very bad combination.

You may not have the same reaction but some people do and you may be one of them.

I was also persuaded into taking it on this board.

Lamdage,

Im very sorry to hear that you had such a bad reaction. Personally, I would never take anything because it has been suggested on this board, and in any case, all medication needs to be prescribed by a psychiatrist, who should be taking responsibility for your treatment.

My previous message was meant solely for Kirkglen, who said he had received benefit from Nardil. In my experience, if one MAOI works for you, there is a good chance that some of the others may work also.

I wish you good luck.
