gluten and schizophrenia

Posted by lori6 on May 20, 2015, at 15:36:48

Hi,

Has anyone heard of a possible connection between gluten sensitivity and schizophrenia?

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2652467/

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16423158

If there might be something to this, why do you suppose patients are not being informed of the possibility?

Thank you in advance.

psychiatry isn't really about...you know...curing mental illness, especially severe mental illness. People w/ SMI tend to be poor and/or unemployed, economically un or under-productive. Read: we don't matter.

I do think Big Pharma has influence, but I mean...even in the 70s-80s, 90s, when most drugs for SMI were off patent and old, docs still weren't all that interested in anything particularly innovative.

As I see it, the problem is that madness is real, but psychiatry has never been about addressing it. Psychiatry is the practice of upper class people--mostly men--controlling and labeling and defining less important people--often women, minorities, the poor--and keeping us down. Yes, I said it: psychiatry is all about oppression, at least it is once you go off the rails, anyway.

So, yeah. I don't think mainstream psychiatry will ever look at this seriously. Mainstream psychiatry has yet to cure anyone of anything, because that's not what psychiatry was created for.

Who is going to fund a study to see whether gluten free diets helps this, that, or the other thing? I mean... Who stands to make money off of that, supposing it were true?

Thank you both
