Running out of Emsam switch to Selegeline, help!

Posted by former poster on April 2, 2015, at 8:44:42

I have 20 days left in Asia but have only 10 Emsam 6mg patches, (I take 1 a day). Extremely doubt that any pharmacy has the Emsam patch here but I would think they should have Selegiline.. Could Selegiline penetrate the BBB faster than usual since I have been on the patch, or have to take it for 3 weeks to feel any effect? Would Selegiline effect be relatively the same? What oral dose do I need to equal the 6mg patch? Really need advice if anyone could. Thanks..

My experience is that oral selegeline works right away. I don't know why you would think it takes 3 weeks. All the MAOI's work right away.

You mean the stimulating side effect working right away? I noticed a slight boost when starting Emsam which fades after a time and then a motivated sedation starts taking its place which is where I'm at now after a year or 2 of taking. I can't feel a mood lift from this med. Just more motivated. Being more active, talkative sequentially lifts my mood somewhat.

Are you sure selegiline is available in the country where you are? Some Asian countries have a range of available pharmaceuticals that differ strongly from Western countries, especially when it comes to "exotic" psychotropic drugs like MAOIs.

I thought Selegiline would be available everywhere as it is one of the first treatments for parkinsons, but it seems that is not so. Emsam however is just too new and expensive to be found in Asia.
