Why should fluoxetine cause weight loss?

Posted by Dispossessed on March 31, 2015, at 20:52:01

An article on currentpsychiatry by Schwartz et al (2007) summarises how various antidepressants affect weight. I'm particularly interested by the findings that fluoxetine causes weight loss - though there is debate as to whether this occurs long-term rather than only in the acute phase.

Looking at the pharmacology of fluoxetine - why should it cause people to lose weight? It has negligible affinity for the norepinephrine and dopamine transporters. Aside from serotonin reuptake, it seems to be a fairly weak antagonist of 5ht2a and 5ht2c - but shouldn't this result in weight gain and an increased appetite (I'm thinking of mirtazapine here).

topamax and wellbutrin, and geodon from couple sources i read, can cause weight loss....
