I thought my new pdoc was a psychiatrist,

Posted by ClearSkies on March 19, 2015, at 14:33:02

...but he is a D.O.
Very confrontational. Disputes my former pdoc's rx's. I'm experiencing severe benzo withdrawal and he asked me (first question) how long I'd been on this binge.
I want to run as fast as I can from this guy. Any feedback?

I also went through severe benzo withdrawal. Getting off benzos is the hardest thing I've ever done. If a doctor had referred to my usage of benzos as a "binge," I would have been deeply offended. He sounds very judgmental.

Saw one also. But the strange thing he is the one who kept prescribing me the benzos and then on to Antidepressants. And the one who found the so called chronic lyme's disease. Now got an old pdoc who could care less what I take. The first one literally ruined my life as told me not to go back to Nursing. Then he got his psychiatrist title. And since he'd gotten so many people on Disability the FDA raided his office. Used to be in three locations cities and last I heard it was one in the boondocks. Sorry for the long reply. P

Not at all, Phillipa. We've each had awful experiences. I'm so sorry.
I have a couple appointments set up with other Psychistrists - so titled - in the region. My therapist went to bat for me within the practice without a comment. I doubt I am the first with a poor relationship. If I wasn't coming from such a "less than" place, mentally and emotionally, I would make some noise.

Instead I will slink and be grateful for the drops of good care I can find.

This wouldn't work for me, it's simply not therapeutic.

Some shrinks (personally, I think the men more so than the women) are *ssh*l*s. Power hungry, sometimes sadistic, often sexist and elitist and homophobic. Trust me...back when I was a pretty little gay dude living off very little $$$, I saw how some of the "best psychiatrists in (city near me)" treat people when they have power over them/us.

Your experience--terrible as it was--is not unique. There are far too many "bad apples" in the mental health profession (its not just the shrinks, btw), and far too many horror stories.

I don't really know what to say...how much $$$ do you have to work with? In a city near me, you can get a 1 hour consult w/ a cash only doc for a bit less than $300, and then less than that for med checks or whatever you have to do afterwards. Community mental health here is...well, they can't prescribed controlled Rxs, usually, but they have lots of rules that keep the docs behavior from getting too unprofessional.

Sorry about this terrible experience. I'll be praying for you :-)

So sorry you had to listen to that doo-doo caca. That's all it is. Binge? This person can't possibly know you or anything enough about your history on any level to accuse you of being on a binge of any kind. What a tool.

Not to mention that anyone with any amount of sensitivity would know that confronting you (or any new client, really) is not only unhelpful, but it can hurt and is plain stupid.

Grrr.....it makes me so furious. Do they really not get this stuff? ((CS)) {just virtual so hope okay} == 10der

I too would get away from this guy.

If that was his first question, he sounds like he's got a chip on his shoulder and an accusatory style-- neither of which you need.

Luckily - no, I'll say fatefully, my therapist has given me several suggestions for alternatives. I am fairly stable on 3/4 of my original scrip - with augentation of medical MJ. Leaves me less functional, but my arms are unscratched, my limbs unbruised, and sleep welcomes me finally.

I will chalk this one up to experience. Why on earth are D.O.'s such poor psychiatrists when they claim to have gone through the same training? Something stinks.

Holistic type doctor. Osteopathy.

http://medicalschoolhq.net/the-difference-between-m-d-and-d-o/

I had one once for primary care, way back when. He was great. But I didn't know they practiced psychiatry, or any specialty for that matter.

Now I'm confused.

Apparently they can be licensed to write psychiatric scrips. I really understood it was a speciallised branch of medicine. Look what I know, after all these years.
I called in a refill request on a medication. Wish me luck.

Yes My longest psychiatrist was a DO. When went for appointment first an hour massage with licensed massage therapist. He also did some work on neck and since on leg a bit shorter than other worked on this. He wrote all my psych meds and then went on to get his psychiatrist license, Once he passed his boards the quality of care went downhill. As a DO he was great Phillipa

I think DO docs used to do spinal manipulation or something...still do, I think...or at least they're trained in it.

DO schools have lower undergrad GPAs. They're more focused on primary care and under-served populations, usually. They have the same prescribing privileges and such as MDs.

I googled it, and apparently some aspiring docs choose between DO school and a foreign medical school for an MD, lol.

Anyway...I don't think his DO status had anything to do with this. Shrinks in general aren't that great, and I've personally found that they tend to be either old and cranky or young and cocky...or middle aged and not interested, lol.

Unfortunately true. This one seems determined to send me into benzo withdrawal with every scrip. More than merely cruel, he's prejudiced in a way that NO doctor has ever treated me.
I am not looking forward to our next appointment, but he'll hear how his chairside manner has further traumatised me.
