I only feel normal when I'm hungover??

Posted by porkpiehat on March 5, 2015, at 9:56:46

I tried to explain this to my pdoc but it doesn't seem to go anywhere:

Of all the meds I've ever been on, I have to say the closest to "normal" I feel is after a night of drinking.

-I feel compassion; I am not emotionally clamped down
-My ADD symptoms are gone
-My meanness is gone
-I don't wrestle with forming thoughts or getting the thoughts to my mouth
-my voice and face muscles aren't tight. It is one of the only times I can sing without my voice getting caught in my throat.
-paranoia is gone
-I don't feel like other people "own" me
-My sex drive comes back full force

By dinner time something snaps and it quickly slips away and my symptoms return.

Funny thing is, I don't feel this way necessarily when I'm drinking, but I do the day after.

Does anyone else experience this and/or know why/how to reproduce it less destructively?

Benzos seem like the obvious answer, but they don't give me the same effect.

Maybe try a glutamatergic. There's sarcosine which is a glycine reuptake inhibitor. Can buy yourself and try 2mg a day. Also n acytlcystine enhances glutamate. Also d serine or d cycloserine. For glutamate reduction, lamictal, keppra, memantine, minocycline, amantadine. Seeing as you say you have libido, and feel more alive id say give nac or sarcrosine a shot, as alchohal lowers glutamate, so maybe the hangover is glutamate rebound. Also there is naltrexone. It's a stretch by far, but a lot of alchohalics who are helped by it say it gives an antidepressant response and makes there life better. Just my thoughts.

Bill that might just be the best thing I'd ever heard! I only wish the Dr's were thinking critically to contemplate this. I've been taking Lamictal for 10 years and lately my mood crashes shortly after I take my morning dose. I can't even take it if I've had more than two beers the previous evening.

Paradoxically I can't lower the Lamictal too far without getting very depressed.

Thanks x10!

I have the same thing. If I don't drink atleast some alcohol the night before, I can't function the next day. Odd. I don't feel hungover either, unless I drink too much.

Interesting. What do you think of Bills hypothesis?

i've noticed if i drink heavely, i go uncoursious for couple hours, and then it wears off and during that period where it's wearing off .. i feel pro social, like a smooth, im not paranoid, just ... hard to explain......but i think it' that short period while alcohol is leaving the body that makes the nueros start to come back on, it's the gaba stuff that the booze makes you feel relaxed.....

when im hung over i have headaches, just sit in a non thinking state, but im more social.....wierd

I actually do some critical thinking when I drink. Helps a lot.

Not so sure about naltrexon. Don't think it would replace the alcohol. Besides, I like the buzz..z

Tried glycine. Didn't help much. Have not tried the other things he mentioned. Nor do I know anything about them.

I like alcohol in moderation. Maybe I'm an alcoholic. But don't care.

The day after using oxycontin, I feel this way 100%. If you are just starting to drink heavily, I think I remember feeling this way in the beginning from drinking as well. I think it's because the chemicals are all out of whack in your brain and also the light sleep you are getting as a result of being intoxicated has proven depression benefits.

Interesting, I do find I feel happier if I sleep less, but never made much of it.
