MAOI to MAOI

Posted by Escapee on February 27, 2015, at 3:03:26

Hi . I've recently switched from amitriptyline 100mg at night to trimipramine 200mg at night. Much better response! Having a few vivid dreams n nightmares but I expected that with trimipramine as I've had it before. But no worse than from amitriptyline anyway. Now I'm on no SSRIs at all and feel a nudge better. What does that tell you! ?
I'm still gonna try lithium in about 2 months time.
Anyway. Does anyone know of any articles/abstracts (with references) that shows MAOIs can be switched quickly or even tapered together? In particular isocarboxazid (Marplan) to tranylcypramine (Parnate)? (Sorry I hate brand names)
My doc said we would need 7 to 10 days off isocarboxazid before the switch. Recently I read on here about switching from phenelzine to isocarboxazid whilst tapering together! I stopped phenelzine dead and then onto isocarboxazid after 3 days. Only because the pharmacy was out of stock or it would have been strait away. My decision NOT my docs.
So, can anyone help show what as safe despite what the (outdated?) text books say?

First of all... have you been on tranylcypromine before and if so, how did you respond? Or would it be entirely new to you?

When i was at the hospital they switched back and forth between Parnate and Nardil with no concerns.

I've been taking MAOIs for 12yrs now. But this would be my 1st time on tranylcypromine.

There very little information to guide. A stroke has been reported when rapidly switching from phenelzine to tranylcypromine. Since you don't know how you respond to tranyl alone, there is additional reason to be cautious.
