Does hypomania from an SSRI make me bipolar?

Posted by oceansun on October 30, 2014, at 12:01:38

I'm only on my third day of Viibryd and I'm a little hypomanic. This happened on Prozac the first time I took it, but not the second time or with other SSRIs. Does this make sense?

Am I bipolar II now given my reaction?

Only if the mania persists beyond the point of drug discontinuation.

Perhaps you can describe in detail what you are experiencing that leads you to conclude that you are manic?

Any family history?

DSM V code for bipolar I: 296.53 with antidepressant-induced mania as a qualifer.

I don't recall what the code is for bipolar II.

Scott first time I've seen this explained this way and makes perfect sense. Thanks Phillipa

Thanks, Scott. This is a great explanation!

My activation or hypomania didn't last when I discontinued Prozac, so I guess I'm not bipolar.

The activation is mainly feeling always hyper and sometimes very irritable and sometimes actually happy. Racing thoughts. With a strong impulse to suddenly cut my long hair short. A sudden interest in talking to people, either in person or online. There's a family history of either bipolar or schizophrenia.

But I just woke up from a long nap feeling immensely sad and not hyper at all. This is a weird rollercoaster.

Describe your hypomania. Hypersexuality? Racing thoughts?

No hypersexuality, yes racing thoughts.

But it doesn't matter anymore -- I've lost that feeling on Viibryd. I'm wondering if I go down to 5 mg it could come back (I was taking 10 mg). I was taking only 10 mg Prozac when I had the hypomania. No depression afterward.

What do you think? I'm definitely not going up on the dose, as the 20 mg I tried today was a disaster physically.

I think the Viibryd might be making you cyclothymic. This is not a terrible thing, but I would definitely excercise caution with your judgement. Upping he dose will exacerbate the problem.

OR

You could have had an anxiety reaction about starting a new med.

Either way, I would give the Viibryd a little time before you assess its benefit to cost ratio.

I have been on Viibryd and found it very helpful. I would compare its efficacy to Lexapro.
