scopolamine = diphenhydramine?

Posted by linkadge on August 3, 2014, at 17:28:56

I know there have been a few studies with scopolamine for depression. I wondered if the AD effect was intrinsic to this scopolamine, or if other agents (benztropine, diphenhydramine etc) might work as well. Thoughts?

Hi Willee,

Scopolamine does help me. Its not a huge AD effect on its own, but it seems to help anxiety.

The problem is that (in Canada) is about $7 a patch. This is not very affordable.

Parnate didn't last very long for me, unfortunately. I did feel some positive effect from it, but it gave me bad insomnia and pulse over 120bmp (landed me in the ER).

Anyhow, I'm on Effexor + remeron + Ritalin which is working fairly well. I have some breakthrough episodes however.

I like Scopolamine as an AD, however it seems to cause rebound depression/anxiety after use and negatively effects my sleep...I think maybe it impacts my hypoglycaemia symptoms?

I occasionally use low dose (1mg) trihexyphenidyl to neutralize stress and tension. It's dirt cheap and does the trick without much rebound. The downside is memory impairment, but with a low dose this is not so strong. Best taken in the daytime or early evening, if taken just before sleep, anticholinergics impair sleep quality.
