Parnate + Geodon safe?

Posted by Scatterbrained on May 5, 2014, at 21:06:39

My doctor seems to think all atypicals are safe with maois but from what I read geodon more or less works as an SNRI combined with a neuroleptic. Definitely don't want to get into a toxic reaction . Does anybody have any insight into this?

Currently on
Parnate 40
Zyprexa 5
Lamictal 100

I would not recommend it

^"Tranylcypromine/ ziprasidone interaction"

"A 41-year-old woman developed serotonin syndrome during treatment with ziprasidone and tranylcypromine for severe depression.

The woman had been receiving ziprasidone 40 mg [frequency, route and duration of therapy not stated] and started treatment with tranylcypromine at 10 mg/day [route not stated] after a 14 day washout of other medications. On day 23 the dosage of tranylcypromine was increased to 50 mg/day in divided doses. The next day she experienced tremors, shivering, diaphoresis, fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and confusion. She was admitted to an emergency department in an agitated state with a fever of 38.5°, a pulse of 130 beats/min, hyperreflexia, shivering and myoclonic jerks of all four extremities requiring restraints. Thanks

Maybe it's time for me to find a new doctor. One who has the Internet in his office . Hard to come by when you are on Medicare.

I would not mix Geodon with an MAOI exactly because it is an SNRI.

I take 60 mg Parnate. So far I've combined it with Zyprexa, then Latuda, now Fanapt. No worries, no issues. Just potentiation of the antidepressant properties of the Parnate.

I know I'm a bit late with this comment, but in case anyone has this question in the future, I have been taking 40 mg parnate divided into 2 doses with 20mg geodon at bedtime for about a year with no problems. I have tried going up on the geodon but it makes me sleep too long (I'm very sensitive to meds).

I had very good results with the combo at first - decreased anxiety, decreased depression to the point where I could actually feel and sustain other emotions. It was great. Over time though the effects have worn off and it's back to the drawing board again.

I did have a particularly horrific interaction recently between parnate and latuda, but I notice that others seem to be taking that combo with no bad effects - so I think it's really just a matter of your own personal biochemistry and what's going to work for you.
