Abilify cannot sleep...

Posted by revv33 on May 30, 2014, at 17:21:01

My pdoc just started adding 5mg of Abilify in the morning to the 75mg invega sustenna and I am trying abilify because I have sexual problems with invega sustenna.

The first day of taking Abilify and I couldn't freaking sleep at all and I am suppose to move up to 10mg for it to be effective for psychosis so I don't know what to do anymore... obviously I can't keep taking it if I can't sleep and it sucks because Abilify is supposedly the best med to take if you are having sexual troubles...

So what I am asking is if anyone here has any experience with Abilify and insomnia or antipsychotics and sexual problems.

OK, I don't know, but...couldn't you take some dopamine agonist or some other Parkinson's drug for the sex se?

Somebody else will know more, I'm sure.

I had some start-up insomnia when I began Abilify a couple months ago at 10mg, but it went away after a couple days. Abilify at lower doses for some people is more activating because the drug supposedly behaves more as a dopamine agonist at lower does and becomes more antagonistic as the dose increases.. supposedly. So moving up to 10mg may actually help.

Invega/ Risperdal may be more likely to cause sexual side effects since they raise levels of the hormone prolactin, more so than any other atypical antipsychotic. the good news is Abilify can actually lower prolactin levels and may counteract some of this for you. I am on Abilify 10mg and have no sexual side-effects, actually less than before I was on it.

You can also take a dopamine agonist like Mirapex, which I also take (for now) -- it has definitely increased my libido even at the lowest dose. Mirapex lowers prolactin as well.

I've never had any sexual problems on any atypicals and i've been on them all.

Abilify made me aroused...

I had the same problem with sleep on abilify. It did make me think about sex more, I was cheaking out all the girls. I tried many doses of abilify, I found the problems just got worse going up in dose. I got to 15mg and doc wanted to try 30! I freaked out at the idea and went back on zyprexa. Zyprexa is the most effective med I ever took and is great for sleep. It does take away at my sex drive a little but I still get it up!

I spent 8 months on Abilify (as an adjunct to my Celexa) and I don't know if I ever got a decent night sleep. It wasn't an energized feeling more of a constantly-aware-that-i am floating just below consciousness feeling. I never got above 3 or 4 mgs though.

Great for my sex life, although I felt less emotionally connected to my conquests lol

Ambien helped some.
