I have something severe...Bipolar I or something. So, I take: 30mgs/Abilify, 1200/Trileptal, 100/Lamictal, low dose (100mgs per dose) Neurontin, up to 2x daily.
I rarely need Neurontin. I have 3mgs tabs of risperidone lying around that I take w/ a Neurontin when agitation hits. That doesn't happen very often. I also do hardcore Orthomolecular.
What do you guys think? Also...2 full dose anticonvulsants...is that a good idea? common maneuver?

CE How do you feel your functioning level is? Are you out and about doing things? If your meds are working that's what's important. Phillipa

I agree with Phillipa.
I also think it is common for a bipolar to be on multiple mood stabilizers. I am taking 10mg Abilify, 100mg Lamictal XR, and 900mg lithium carbonate along with my other meds. This rapid rapid cycler hasn't had any manic or mixed issues since the switch to Abilify 2 months ago. Now if that would be the same case with the depression things would be golden.

Hi CE. I use 200 mg. lamictal and 750 mg. lithium. Also 600 mg. Lyrica which goes a tiny ways towards mood stabilization (but not too,far) but it helps with GAD and tension. Two mood stabilizers seem common around here. At least not unheard of. I am always trying to reduce my meds. But I rapid cycle and my dx is BP II. I feel much better on my two.

What's the dose you take?
>2 full dose anticonvulsants...is that a good idea? common maneuver?Using two anticonvulsants to stabilize your mood is not an unncommon practice. Usually two medications will have different methods of action which can often work synergestically.
Lamotrigine is generally accepted to be a member of the sodium channel blocking class of antiepileptic drugs, but it could have additional actions since it has a broader spectrum of action than other sodium channel antiepileptic drugs
Meanwhile, Trileptal is primarily a sodium channel blocker.
You can see adding Lamictal with its extra mechanism of action may provide added benefit.
