Pdocs have, for a while now, used dopamine agonists as augmentation agents when antidepressant response is not so great. To some degree, this route has been replaced by using the atypical antipsychotics/second generation antipsychotics (SGAs) as augmenters. But I have taken nearly all the antidepressants and all of the available SGAs, and my pdoc is talking about trying the dopamine agonists. They include:
Requip (ropinirole)
Apokyn (apomorphine)
Mirapex (pramipexole)
Symmetrel (amantadine)
Parlodel (bromocryptine)
It's funny that the SGAs are dopamine *antagonists* used to augment, yet the dopmine agonists, above, are also used to augment. I'd love to hear stories of experiences from people who are using these agents to augment the AD. I'm not as interested in people who are using these agents to combat Parkinson's Disease.
Thanks!

from what i've read they can be activating, which can help depression, but they have sort of withdrawals when suddenly stopped, so they should be carefully dosed

I've used Requip and Mirapex to augment my mood. Neither had any great impact.
SGAs used to augment treatment of depression usually included those that were 5ht1a agonists.
Depression can be a side effect of antipsychotic use.

I love Strunk and White, and the omission of needless words, but not at the expense of content. I'd love to hear from people who either have actual experience with these agents (and who describe that experience) or who have theoretical experience with these agents (and who can be discursive).

Yes! Depression can result from aap use.
Mirapex put me into a trance-like stupor. Very strange. Not helpful for my depression.

i have not been on any you mention (but not for lack of trying). however the one med that has worked for me over the years for my mood is the ADHD drug Adderall. i have tried many other adhd drugs and NONE give me the mood lift (generic) adderall does. i noticed that all the others i've tried are actually DRI's NOT DRA's, last summer i had to try others as i was not able to find the one that worked for me any longer, i tried two other DRI's with HORRIBLE results, realized the difference and asked for a different DRA which was desoxyn but it was too low dose.
i ended up finding my old generic adderall after blood sweat and tears searching. Luckily.i truly wish we could get some novel agents here that worked more on dopamine agonists (and NE) than on serotonin.
This is the end of the thread.
