Risperdal for bipolar disease causing problems?

Posted by bissie66 on May 5, 2014, at 6:39:44

I started Risperdal 3-4 weeks ago. my cousin is bp too and my pdoc is of the belief that it helps to try things that worked on other family members. it was literally a life save for her.

for me, it was great at first. depression was GONE and had great energy. i saw great energy bc now i have BAD energy. Not depressed but extremely agitated. Quick to tears from frustration. Sleeping difficult. extremely angry. extreme feeling of internal pressure like i will or want to explode. screaming at family and stuff. afraid to go to work bc i hate people more than ever.

called pdoc he said sounds like mixed episodes. he upped my lithium to 600 mg (was only taking 300 due to bad hand tremors). he said increase klonopin at night from 1 mg to 2 mg. that helped; in fact it didn't make me tired but happier and had good energy. since then (2 days ago) it's bad again. have tried various benzos. ativan helped me sleep when i took 3 and relax a bit.

am calling pdoc again of course but since he's not taking me off the riserdal i wonder if anyone else had bp episodes worsened by risperdal. i guess my pdoc thinks i'm just having mixed episodes but not due to the risperdal.

out of fear, i did not take the risperdal yesterday or today but don't feel beter. i feel insane.
doc told me to call his cell over the weekend if i didn't improve. i should have but didn't want to bother him. dumb.

I feel you should take the resperidol as your doc said. Give it a bit of time. You did say it worked before right? Phillipa

thanks to both. philippa, for reminding me it's usually a good idea to take doc's orders until/unless he changes them or you truly can't tolerate. and yes, it did work before but i too have read it can poop out FAST. maybe that's all it is. maybe i'm having a mixed episode and the Risperdal is no longer lifting my depression or making me hypmanic. looking back, i was very hypomanic when it worked, but only half the day!

You are experiencing breakthrough symptoms which would be best treated by raising the lithium and the Risperdal. 600 mg of Lithium is still a relatively low dose and you may not have adequate blood levels.

What's the dose of your Risperdal?

Raise it to 3 mg and see if that helps calm things down.

It won't make things worse, I promise.

I was under a court ordered protocol for 4-5 months from my years of choosing mania and not taking meds and they gave me Risperdal Consta and the squirmy legs or akathesia may be the energy. It made me mentally feel manic and nuts inside but drooling on the outside. It made me look pregnant and my face had that night of the living dead look to it and I have always been a looker so I kissed up and got off that order and moved and went off ASAP, and my abs still haven't gone all the way back but my face looks normal again. I hated that drug

Just curious what dose you were at? I have taken this twice and first time I got scared off it from side effects that I never got and 2nd time I got it from too much anxiety side effects but didn't stick it out to see if it went away or possibly it was Akisis I have no idea how to spell or pronounce and then this 3rd time I was bound and determined to stay on it for the summer at the least while I watched 4 grandkids and now the dumb stuff doesn't seem to be even working and I am most frustrated but am only at .25 so that's why i' ,wondering what dose you were taking???

I am taking 1 mg a day. I've been having anxiety too, plus confusion and memory loss. I don't know if there's a parallel or not. When I first started taking it it was so helpful but now I'm anxious a lot and I don't know if that's why. Unlike many, I am losing weight, probably bc of the anxiety which makes me feel nauseated.

Ok I've stuck this out and I think I'm on about day 8 and tODAY FINALLY I am feeling some benefits of risperdal again. I finally emailed my pdoc and he said to increase it because I've gotten to use to it now. I did not increase it because I had a feeling sooner or later so I stuck it out...I'm not by any means out of the woods yet and still having but today finally I felt a bit if quietness in my head and coped a bit better with what I had to do today plus I'm feeling a bit of motivation though doing nothing with it yet lol I know this probably doesn't help you but be patient and give things time to work or ask Dr about changing meds. My Dr. Will put me on lamictal if this didn't work out and I've heard it can the weeks for full effect if these meds though we do feel them much sooner then that. I hope this gets figured out and quick so you can get some relief!
