I have to say that there are now two ME's.
One is the one I grew up to be and the other is the medicine me.One is a short temper person the other calm as can be, so how can both of these both be me?
Does the medicine hide the true nature of thee or has it brought out what was meant to be?
This is most confusing of who I really am this one I grew up to be on this one of the medicine man.
Risperdal what have you done to me?
Confusing before but now even more.
Trying to figure out who is the real
me the one I grew up on or the medicine me?

My son actually figured it out for me after I posted this poem on facebook. He said that if you have a imbalanced brain chemistry and the medicine fixes it then THAT would be the real you! Makes perfect sense and I now I feel better.

With all due respect to your son, that sounds like the over simplified med marketing that came out around the time I started AD's.
that these chemicals were expertly honed to reverse whatever defect your brain has assumes that the doctors understand A) how the meds REALLY work and B) how mental disorders REALLY work.
It also removes consideration of any psychological processes from our condition.
I am right there with you with the loss of self and frustration of "is this me, my disease, the medication, or a side effect?" that makes it so hard to choose a treatment and move on with life.
I've been on so many things that make me feel "different" or even "better" in different ways, but I think the idea that one of them is changing the magic fuse in my shorted-out brain is attractive yet naive.
Please forgive my negativity. My luck with medication has been spotty at best.

Only med that has worked for me is benzos. No ad's as was never depressed. No psychology. As I can psycho analyze myself pretty easily. Just trying to get rid of all these foreign substances. Phillipa

Well, the me before the medicine could not have been the real me, because that me was colored by mental illness, which can never be mistaken for the real me.

Which ME can you stand to live with? Take your pick, I chose the medicated one, its more tolerable to others and myself. I m sure if I was unmedicated I would be on the streets, by choise. Unfortunatly. I would probably be on crack again. Like right before I learned to take my meds for a summer.

I'm doing pretty well now. I have not been totaly off meds since 1999. Just lower doses of z and other meds. It was pretty rough with trying to find a replacement for z or seeing if i can do with out it. I hope for no more changes now.
