any experience with metformin for AD weight gain?

Posted by mogger on April 9, 2014, at 8:52:20

I am back on zyprexa and luckily don't gain much weight on it however strangely mostly buspar and typically mirtazapine does cause considerable weight gain. Not a common side effect for buspar but it increases appetite big time for me. My pdoc says metformin is excellent for combating zyprexa weight gain which he has prescribed me. My question is has anyone had experience with success using metformin to combat weight gain from anti depressants like remeron other than AAPs? Many thanks,

Mogger

I do not have experience, but I am adding a post here to encourage others to add their experiences.

I'm also pointing out that WOW! zyprexa AND mirtazapine. I'm surprised you're not 300 pounds lol.

Thanks for responding! Yes I am on the dynamic weight duo! Thinking about Saphris but don't know if it is good for depression or anxiety. Tried Latuda which was awesome but the akathisia was unbearable even at 20mgs.

Doh!

The whole point of my first post was to indicate that I was interested in this for a reason!

My PDOC and I have discussed my metformin as a possible option for AAP weight gain. We went with Topamax monotherapy for this. I was on Abilify, but I gained so much weight that I switched to Latuda.

I love Latuda. It is an excellent AAP! Sorry about your side effect. It works well, but in spite of all of that-- I want to switch back to Abilify. It was still better. Abilify is just that much of a wonder drug, I suppose. I feel like Latuda has more of a "blunting" effect on my life, if that makes sense.

I'm going to ask my PDOC to augment metformin if I was to switch back to Abilify and possibly raise my dosage of Topamax from 200 to 300mg.

That's why I was really wanting to get some input from posters.

I was very interested in asenapine myself, but I never tried it. If I somehow couldn't be on Latuda or Abilify, that's the one I would pick.

I was under the impression you were trying to help me out with my lame post trying to get others involved! :) Great to hear Latuda is working for you. It was a phenomenal AD for me. If it makes you slightly flat have you tried a lower dose to see if you can retain the benefits minus the flatness?

Great idea!

I think I've been on Latuda for free for a year next visit will a year and a month I thnk?

That's because my PDOC gives me free samples of either 60 or 80mg. She gives the 40mg. to new patients she is trialling the drug on. I did get 40mg. when I first started, and I'm not sure if it'd be that much significant from 60mg. Because 80mg. is nor any different from 80mg in terms of effect. I can't tell any difference.

I know she has to have other patients on Latuda lol. I know this as a fact because she's mentioned it. I know there's no way she has enough samples for all these people.

I think she likes me lol. We always discuss pharmacology, the industry, her life, my life, she remembers everything about me when I come in the office. She says she looks forward to me coming in more than other patient lol. I make job easy for her she says because my ideas are always "spot on". I get prescribed 9 meds so I bring my iPad in with them all listed and notes about my progress on each one. I felt so comfortable that I told her I got addicted to the Lyrica she prescribed me and paid two people to go to the doctor to get scripts for me. I still have scripts for Adderall IR, Xanax XR, and a small empathy dose of gabapentin lol.

She gave me every sample of Brintellix she had, but she warned me I might actually have to fill that one lol.

I take 2000 mgs of Metformin every day and have found it does not help with weight gain at all.

just like meds, they don't work the same with everyone. diabetes forums always have people with a lot to say about metformin.

Fantastic to hear Phil thanks for sharing. What medication were or are you on that metformin helps? I see it studied for zyprexa but wondering if it might work for mirtazapine.

seroquel is the main offender. i'm not sure on mirtazapine, i'm not one of the brains here. lol i'm also on lithium but tapering off. clonazepam which will be next if lithium goes ok. plus! lamictal.
hopefully you'll get to try it. it was a good feeling to weigh every other day and see that i dropped another pound.
if you take it the diabetics call it the explosive diarrhea pill. it doesn't affect everyone that way but it affects many! this doesn't happen in the bathroom, probably isle 6 in walmart. that side effect fades away thank god.
