Hi,
I currently use seroquel PRN for sleep. I find it not very effective for sleep which is the main point though it does have an antidepressant effect once the stupor has worn off.
Does zyprexa have AD effects and does it effectively induce sleep?

Zyprexa antagonizes a lot of serotonin receptors, so I wouldn't cal it an AD. It does induce sleep.

I would recon that Zyprexa has at least a mild AD effect alone and produces antidepressant synergy when combined with another AD -- at least for me. As Zyprexa antagonizes many serotonin receptors I would say the combination is somewhat similar to the Remeron + SSRI/SNRI combo

^This site may be helpful in differentiating these types of meds. It seems that Zyprexa may as well have the ability to prevent recurrences of depressive episodes.
Many tricyclics are sleep-inducing as well as have AD properties.

Thanks for the input--I think I am ditching the aap's. That's my goal. Currently reading about cbd oil.... And reading an article about primary insomnia and the trend of prescribing aap's. I can provide a link if anyone is interested.
Btw, I had forgotten education.org! (if that's the correct name). Jim Phelps Jim is great. Thanks for that link. I re-read some stuff.

If zyprexa reduces your depression, then it is an antidepressant!
I find that zyprexa can reduce depression. It has some targets in common with antidepressants (5-ht2a, 5-ht2c, 5-ht7 antagonism).
The dopamine effects may (or may not) help depression.

i take zyprexa 20mg.....took it for years....it defintlty induces sleep, but the main thing is the next day is the sedation it causes....it really can slow things down....like having a bunch of bricks over you....
but yes it actually does make depression go away....i don't know how it does it but it does.....makes the irrtibility and the negative thoughts go.....

"depression" covers a lot of ground, as does "antidepressant." Amphetamine is an antidepressant. So is low-dose flupenthixol, a neuroleptic used in the UK. They do completely different things.
I didn't much care for zyprexa at therapeutic doses, but low doses were awesome. Sedating at night, mild tranquilization that carried through the next day...good stuff, especially in combo with other meds/supplements for what was going on back then. Too bad I got akathisia :-(
Anyway, I guess I'm saying that its not strange that zyprexa by itself would help "depression," because "depression" comes in many forms and covers a lot of ground in terms of symptoms. You just gotta go with what works for you, with an eye to side effects and costs.
My personal recommendation would be to get the melt-in-your-mouth zyprexa. It may cause substantially less weight gain. With Prozac, zyprexa is supposed to both tranquilize and stimulate in all the right places (something about increasing dopamine, serotonin, and NE levels in all the right places). I imagine it'd do the same with other AD drugs, too. I just wouldn't take it with Zoloft, personally (too numbing!).
Good luck to you!

You might want to try Latuda before ditching the AAP's altogether. It can really help or really hurt sleep, in my experience, and it certainly boosted my AD. Less fixation, intrusive suicidal feelings/thoughts.
I also found it to be weight neutral. Of course it was a little numbing, but what isn't?
