Wow, lots of Nardil threads recently!
I'll add to it. I Just started Nardil a few days ago, for social phobia and mood. I am replacing a number of drugs (amisulpride, buspirone, vyvanse) with it, so I am excited. But scared. Vyvanse is what helped me focus and get motivated and get the UMPH to move forward in my life. In the end though I was having terrible crash in mid afternoon and Vyvanse dosing was always real tricky, too low and felt nothing, too high, overfocused on wrong things, not getting work done. And amisulpride pooped out for mood and social anxiety.
In any event, I have been on Nardil, Parnate, and emsam before. I am BP2. Last time I was on MAOIs was a time of deep non-functioning depression, so it is hard to compare to now when things are much better.
I am struggling with some effects though, which also may be due to the vyvanse withdrawal. My mood is OK, i feel maybe a very slight boost and definite chill-out effect due to its effects on GABA so far. I am only at 45mg though. I am 225lbs male 33 years old, and guessing I will probably need to go up a lot higher.
How fast should one typically increase. So far feeling fatigued and brain fogged and very demotivated. I am hopeful at some point the stimulating effects of MAOI will kick in, but so far not much. Does nardil have to kill off all the MAOI in the gut first before it hits the brain?
Anything possible to help with the fatigue I can take on top of it? Mostly worried about being too fogged up, but presumably this will clear in time.
Really worreid though about weight gain. Has anyone ever experienced Nardil to NOT cause it? Is it mostly metabolic and real or simply water weight? I have heard both. I can't recall what happened the last time I was on it to be honest, but I do know I switched to Parnate and didnt eally give it a full trial, presumably due to side effects.
So far, lots of time on the couch, and minimal productivity or motivation. Incidentally, my food is tasting VERY salty. Is that a sign of salt retention/edema and i wonder what one could do to counteract? What's a good diuretic, dandelion?
Sorry for the sprawling long winded post.
Oh also, my Dr. has a funny idea about adding disulfiram to Nardil at some point, as a tool to boost dopamine (instead of say a stimulant). Anyone ever heard of this combo (MAOI plus disulfiram)?
Thanks all
uncouthp.s. miss this board, was absent for a long long time but find great stuff recently and lots of activity!!!

The brain fog and fatigue are a classic Nardil side effect. They should go away 5 months or so after titrating up to your daily dose. Only thing that helped me during that period was large amounts of coffee and even then I had to take several naps per day. Starting on an MAOI is just a pain in the *ss unfortunately but most people find it worth it in the long run.
As for weight gain, I'm pretty convinced it's metabolic. I gained a lot of weight in my belly area, like a type 2 diabetic. I'm finding it extremely hard to lose now, even with diet and exercise. Supposedly the type II diabetes drug metformin can help with losing weight on Nardil, so that might be an option.

Thanks for the response! 5 months is a long time :( but hopefully i can manage. Def worried about weight gain. tend to gain weight on all antipsychotics fairly consistently, and still working off my zyprexa belly, with the help of my endo who DOES have me on a metformin and victoza regime (which has SLOOWWWLY helped me to drop 15 lbs). SO kind of worried Nardil is coming on board when I have already used up my ammunition so to speak, but we'll see. Def feel additional cravings for carbs. Scary!
I wonder if modafinil would help the fatigue? Great to hear that the Nardil fatigue does go away...does it? Exercise ability and baseline BP return to normal? Does it ever become energizing? It should given what it does to dopamine, NE, and PEA concentrations!!!

Yes, the fatigue does eventually go away. My BP never went quite back up to baseline (I used to be hypertensive, though so that's a good thing in my case) but the orthostatic hypotension did go away. I do have lower exercise capacity, but I weigh more and smoke more than I did pre-nardil so I'm not sure it's really the Nardil causing that. Never became energizing for me, other than lack of depression being energizing in and of itself.
Good luck and try to resist those carb cravings. I was buying 12 packs of cupckaes and eating them in one night after starting Nardil. Felt so good that I didn't care about the weight gain then, but now I regret it of course.
