I was prescribed Neurontin for anxiety/restlessness. I was on it several years ago, 900mg at night, and while it improved my sleep quality, it never directly helped put me to sleep. On the plus side, it wiped out my anxiety the next day, at the expense of depression and brain fog.
Anyway, I started with 100mg b.i.d. yesterday and am finding it energizing, but in a somewhat unpleasant way (I feel miserable and teary). I'm willing to put up with any mood disruptions for the time being in order to be able feel less restless, so was wondering if anyone knew whether the energizing effects pass?
I'm also wary that if it doesn't work, the withdrawal could be rather unpleasant, so am hesitant to remain on it too long.

I took Neurontin for some time before it really hit me--as in made me energetic and, eventually, manic. It was the first time I experienced "true" textbook mania. this was at about 900 mg. Tread lightly--it's a weird med--and I've heard of others who've responded in similar, paradoxical ways.

Thanks brynb.
Yeah, it feels like a benzo, insofar as those things just agitate me, increase muscle tension etc. these days. I feel more upbeat, but on edge.
The annoying part is that, on just 100mg, I also experience rather uncomfortable interdose withdrawals after just a few hours. So I'm hesitant to stay on it for too long. Coming off low-dose Lyrica recently was extremely difficult.

Lyrica can be rather addicting. Happened to quite a few on here when newly released. It's it used mostly for diabetic neuropathy now? Phillipa

Just googled neurotin same as gabapentin. I've heard it is good for anxiety. Good med choice. Phillipa

I take up to 300mgs/day for agitation with...bipolar or...something.
Anyway, its alright. I couldn't see it being good for social phobia or gad, but I could see it for agitation if you're on other meds, maybe akathisia and insomnia. Just a guess.

100 mg is not nearly enough to affect any kind of mood change. I imagine your state is ppurely psychological.
Withdrawal from Neurontin is not that difficult.

Lyrica is actually very similar to Neurontin/Gabapentin: it's a a newer, "sister" med. most people can't take it alone for bipolar or epilepsy--it's generally not effective enough on its own.
Regardless, it tends to be addictive and actually feels stronger in lower doses. The withdrawals can be pretty tough, actually, and it's used a lot as a sub for benzos, but it really doesn't compare. Also, it was originally touted as a panacea for many illnesses, and the drug company (I forgot who) got in deep water for marketing it as on-label for many different diseases.
just my two-cents on it.

Fibromyalgia, neuropathic pain, partial onset seizures with other seizure meds, the list is too long to write. And so are the side effects. Wow it changed so much what is written. Phillipa

I definitely get energy from gabapentin (and pregabalin).
Withdrawal is hard off a 1,200-2,400mg./day regiment of pregabalin.
This is the end of the thread.
