Expired diazepam

Posted by sukarno on December 31, 2013, at 2:13:34

I have about 68 tablets of diazepam (5mg, yellow color) I got in 2007.

I've almost always kept them at room temperature in an air conditioned environment.

Are they safe to take or is there a risk of mold or other pathogens in the pills (bacteria, etc) on them?

The pills look fine.

I really don't want them to go to waste.

Safe? Mold/germ risk?

Thanks! :-)

i honestly don't know... but i would assume they are still good. if you aren't sure... then take them back to your pharmacy. they might pass them onto other people who need them (if they are still good). or not... if they aren't...

maybe you could ask your pharmacy if they are still good.

I don't know for sure but I personally have meds from years ago valium is one but not 7 years old. Might have lost some potency. Tough one as if take to pharmacy would they be required to destroy them as expired? Phillipa

I just took two Valium (2007 but expiration date was 2010 or 2011, although the bottle was opened in 2007).

I don't feel much effect but that could be psychological. I could be expecting it not to work because of the "expired" stigma.

I'll wait another hour to see if it kicks in.

Yep, they work just like the new pills do. I feel sedated..

I suppose with something as long-acting as diazepam, losing a little potency isn't going to have a detrimental effect as would alprazolam. :-)

I thought they would still work as heard once that the military uses meds that are expired for years. I wouldn't think antibiotics though

I would alternate the old with the new pills. I'm against wasting pills myself unless they are really inexpensive. Valium may be one of the cheaper meds if they're generic.

Yeah, I should just get them from my pdoc. The generic is only 1 cent or less per tablet. Very cheap. It's more expensive to see the doctor than to get the pills. hehheh...

When these run out I'm going to the pdoc. Last time I got 47 tablets for 38 cents.
