remeron withdrawl/itching

Posted by marcus1968 on November 26, 2013, at 8:05:06

Hello I have been taking low dose(3.75 mg) remeron for wonderful sleep for 4 months now...
I have decided that the daytime sedation and the lethargy are just not bearable. I quit it 2 days ago and now I AM ITCHING REALLY BAD... could such a low dose of remeron discontinuation be causing me this much distress?? any experience out there? thanx

Mirtazapine (Remeron) is a very strong antihistamine. Do you suffer from any allergies?

I suggest taking cetirizine (Zyrtek or a generic), 10mg once a day. You could also consider short-term use of a sedating antihistamine in the evening, if appropriate. You should go and speak to a pharmacist for advice. Some newer antihistamines are available on prescription only, but they are likely to be a lot more expensive than OTC cetirizine without being any better, so I wouldn't personally rush to the doctor straight away unless a major rash has developed or some other unexpected symptoms.

Personally never heard of itching from going off a med. But we are all different. I'd call the doc that prescribed the remeron and let him/her know what's going on as if in the USA we have Thanksgiving so no docs other than emergency calls. You can ask a pharmacist but most likely will say to call doc as not allowed to prescribe only suggest something over the counter. Is the itching all over your body or localized? Phillipa

When I quit Remeron, I tapered it over a few weeks. I don't remember any withdrawal symptoms. If your itching doesn't go away soon, you might want to go back on Remeron and taper it this time instead of quitting cold turkey.

Hi P,

Many of the potentially appropriate treatment options are available over the counter :)

Remeron is an antihistamine, withdrawl could cause histamine related itching, try taking a Zyrtec tablet every day for a week or two, then half a tablet every day for a week
