hi all-
while I'm doing well on my current regimen (lexapro, tramadol, seroquel and ativan), i've developed excessive sleepiness over the last 6 weeks. I usually sleep late (anywhere from 10-12), take naps, and go to sleep early (between 9-11). my depression and anxiety are in remission and at bay, but i'm so lethargic.
nuvigil made me feel "off," maybe even down, and provogil isn't really helping. neither is covered by my insurance and i can't pay for them out of pocket, anyway.
i've taken adderall in the past but it made me too moody with a host of other unsavory side effects. plus, i felt suicidal when i came off it. i took dexedrine for about a month (a while ago) and noticed it felt much cleaner and smoother than adderall, so i'm contemplating asking my pdoc for dexedrine.
so, can anyone weigh in on stims and your experience? thanks in advance...

well, from what youve stated you may not want to listen to my blurb. i had bad result with the ones i've been on. but here goes.
Strattera was like an expensive weight loss drug...otherwise did nothing.
Ritalin was ok for a while, helped some with energy, but little with mood.
Ritalin LA was actually worse than normal ritalin, energy bummed out early and nothing for mood.
Adderall (corepharma mfg-perfect just what i need for energy and mood) (sandoz, barr, teva mfg. - all left me with terrible headaches, and really bad nausea, due to SE i couldnt stand to be on them longer than a week)
-never been on name branddexedrine-tried 15, 30, 45mg didnt really seem to make a difference, i could hardly even manage to crawl out of bed...seriously, my limbs felt terribly heavy and SO tired....
Vyvanse 50 and 70mg- now i'm sure its probably unusual but i actually became VERY depressed on this, even a little psychotic as i started to have visual illusions of me commiting suicide...constant thoughts of self harm, and constant voice in head saying 'i'm gonna do it', very teary/cry and scared.
finally got off that and tried Desoxyn-
now the tricky thing with this is (at least what they told me) is that you can only purchase in 5mg tabs. so my rx was according...
i took 5mg once in am and again in afternoon.
This was like placebo, so doubled. still nothing. nurse practitioner said i could go up to 20. i went up to 15mg and it did start to help with both mood and energy...but not enough. i wore out completey by about 6pm exhausted. and my mood was...eh.i think if i could have gone up to 20 or even 25 or higher it could have worked. but that next week i had an interview to go to (for the job i REally wanted) so i went back on sandoz adder all (headaches and all) a couple days before so i could get through it.
and managed to stay on it until i got my hands on that Beautiful Pink Adderall. So anyway bryanb
i wanted you to know my effects but keep in mind, my system is Obviously very picky.
Also, i noticed that the adderall And the Desoxy are both DRA's NOT DRI's. and i had bad reaction to the DRI's.
if you seemed to respond well to the DRI's i would stick with those.
Those are Dopamine reptake inhibitors.
i did well with the Dopamine receptor agonists.
they do very different things.
so most likely you will respond well to one OR the other. ..maybeBestBest wishes

if you want a energy boost and concentration, adderall.....if you want a less body stimulation....dexedrine, adderall is more of a sting, and dexedrine is smoother, but it still provides the psychostimulant effect to work and talk and do all the things with motor tasks....

having taken Adderall (XR and IR) and Vyvanse, I prefer Vyvanse by far. Incredibly smooth, long lasting (about 9 hours for me), less anxiety. If I couldn't get Vyvanse, I'd ask for dexedrine. Vyvanse s a $20 copay for me and the retail price is actually lower than Adderall XR at the pharmacy I go to.
What kind of Adderall did you take - XR? IR? brand? generic? Some people claim the generics aren't as good as the branded kind.
Adderall is 25% levoamphetamine (the physically stimulating one that is most active on norepinephrine) and 75% dextroamphetamine (the dopamine releasing mentally stimulating one). It's the l-amphetamine that is more anxiogenic. But if you're really tired the norepinephrine boost might not be so bad. I was taking Adderall XR (brand), first at 10mg then 20mg, and it was causing pretty nasty mid-afternoon crashes and anxiety. Six hours after taking it I'd start to feel anxious, and would take a walk around the neighborhood (at work) to try to calm down, and sometimes leave early if I didn't feel better afterwards.
Dexedrine is all dextroamphetamine (hence the brand name) which makes it better in many cases. Vyvanse is lisdexfetamine, which is a prodrug that metabolizes into dextroamphetamine in the bloodstream (I think?) and as a result is much smoother and longer-lasting than just taking IR d-amphetamine. I believe a given quantity of lisdexamphetamine (by weight) turns into about 30% dextroamphetamine; that is, 30 mg Vyvanse will be like 9 mg dextroamphetamine released over time.
Sometimes (if I'm really tired) I think the additional noradrenergic stimulation from levoamphetamine might be useful - but only if I've actually slept. But not that much - Adderall 10mg XR is okay, 20mg XR isn't. Otherwise, I think it just causes more anxiety.
This is the end of the thread.
