Nardil?

Posted by Peter Gibbons on July 26, 2013, at 18:20:02

Hi,

I've been on Nardil for 3 weeks now (first week on 45mg, last 2 weeks so far 60mg) and today I noticed since I finally got some ok sleep last night (thanks melatonin!), I'm feeling really calm and pretty happy, actually at some points in the car driving I was giggling to myself for no real reason lol.. and earlier today I had some coffee, it seemed to hit me much stronger than usual and I was feeling extremely energized/take-charge, which I think may have been a combination of the caffeine lifting away this terrible fatigue I've had from Nardil in combination with the fact caffeine is supposedly stronger on an MAOI.

So, I have a few questions:

1. , Is coffee okay to drink while on Nardil? It made me feel pretty great and worked well for the fatigue side-effect, but I read something about coffee "maybe" having a bad effect on the therapeutic efficacy of Nardil's dopaminergic aspect.... if it's a bad idea, then what other options do I have for battling the damn fatigue?

2. , Is the borderline-euphoric calm state I'm experiencing just a short lived hypomania that will probably fade, or the therapeutic effect of Nardil finally kicking in? I've only been on Nardil for a total of 3 and 1/2 weeks, with the past 2 weeks being 60mg.. not sure if that's enough time to feel it working or just the hypomania people sometimes mention so thought I'd ask.

3. , If I drink alcohol (Vodka) at this stage of my Nardil trial, or at any point during my time on this medication (which may be forever if it works well hahah), will it permanently mess up or otherwise alter the effect of the drug in a bad way? I realize a hangover is obviously natural following a night of boozing, but I don't want to f*** up what could finally be a good med for my mild social anxiety/ worse depression + anxiety with just a bit of partying.

Thanks to any and all who reply, I appreciate it!!
:)

Its ok, but be careful with it. Start small and dont overdo it. There always is the possibility of carrying liquid nifedipine with you for BP emergencies. You can lick some off your handback to not be overdosed on it.

Id start out careful and have nifedipine on me and i would carry a medical bracelet saying that you take the Nardil for the anaesthesist in emergencies. This has nothing to do with the coffee or diet mistakes, but doctors need to know about it even when your unconcious.

The fatique disappears as well in most people id say.

A hint of it will last. Most of it isnt necessarily desirable and will disappear with time.. its a beginning side effect than can be pleasant. You shouldnt make any major life decisions until you have moved on to a more calm and reasonable sense of wellbeing. Everything may look too rosy to make big decisions.

Dont worry about it. Though i would advise you to be careful, start out slowly and never do "binge drinking". I found its ok to get a little tipsy, but no more than that. At least i wouldnt.

Get used to the medication before you experiment too much with those things. It will be okay.

Maybe you can borrow a BP measuring device from a friend and check your reaction to certain amounts of coffee or foods.

Also, if you get orthostatic hypotension (i did the first two times i went on the drug).. simple table salt fixes this perfectly. You can use the BP device to check how much you need. In the first weeks i always made sure my BP is okay when i left the house and had some extra salt with me.

Ask your doctor about the nifedipine. If you have dangerously high BP, there is a certain feel about it. Id go with half of the liquid inside one Nifedipine pill as a rule of thump. Thats 5mg.

Its not the point of Nifedipine though that you deliberately do dangerous things while on your MAOI.

If you have any other questions, im glad to try to answer them the best i can.
