Bethanechol Alternative

Posted by Tyrannosaur on April 7, 2013, at 15:04:45

Hey,

Bethanechol has been around for a long time and has been useful for treating dry mouth and constipation. Sadly it's not available in my country.

Are there any alternatives to Bethanechol out there?

I'm already using a daily dose of 1000mg magnesium as supplement. And it help a little bit, but not all the way. The main issue is however dry mouth, and I'm looking for something similar like Bethanechol which treats both dry mouth and constipation, and is very easy to get prescribed by a doctor if one asks about it.

But thanks for your input, magnesium is usually excellent at treating IBS.

For dry mouth, try pilocarpine eye drops, 2-3 drops under the tounge

Mestinon tablets by mouth are another alternative

Thanks for your reply, but Phenoxybenzamine had dry mouth and hypotension as side effects, and I've already got major issues with these two.

I also looked through every single Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor on wikipedia and most were not for human consumption, and i couldn't find any indication that the rest were useful for either dry mouth or constipation.

Bethanechol is mainly used for treating urinary retention. But it has other useful effects that I'm looking for; such as relief from dry mouth and constipation. Plus it's very easily prescribed by any doctor if asked about.

Oops, when i checked the wikipedia page for Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, i noticed i had missed the Reversible inhibitors section. These do indeed seem to be somewhat similar to Bethanechol, I'll check them out more in detail.
