Resources for alcoholism/substance abuse recovery

Posted by AMD on March 31, 2013, at 17:15:11

I'm having a very rough time right now, with no local support group, and feel very sad and hopeless, bottomed out.

Does anyone have recommendations for sites for support and to talk with people who have gone through or are going through a similar experience? (I'm starting a program this week but would really like to be more proactive about things.)

Phil --

Although I appreciate the response, I wasn't looking for instructions on how to perform a Google search. :-) I was more hoping the seasoned individuals on this focus had personal experience to help weed out (no pun intended) the good resources from the fluff. Have you had (if you have even needed) any personal experiences with the sites in this list?

Thanks

theres http://www.aa.org/?Media=PlayFlash and NA too....

but those are more like meetings you go to and talk about addiction....there's ton of them in the US...but, you may need a more active treatment to take care of it, there's some psych hospitals that offer that help, and they DEFINTLY can give you tons of resources, just go in and ask...see if you can get in there outpatient program. I've been through many substance abuse programs and rehabs. They usally are based around 12 step program...but still there all diffrent.

check out hospitals near your area and ask them for resources, im telling that is perfect place to go for help.

I'd suggest the achieves when the withdrawal board was available. In the archives search for withdrawal. Those that posted there most likely were stuggling with same issues. Betting also that AA, NA google would give many options for you area and Online. Phillipa

I've known about these guys forever and it's where I would start my search.

For my mother the best treatment center, the only one that worked was AA. It's a helluva lot cheaper too. She would have died without it. Without her willingness to work the program.

Have you tried AA? Most cities have websites with all the meetings and times listed. You can also call the main office and talk to a volunteer about whether AA might help you. I don't know what your substance of choice is, but in my experience, AA is open to anyone with a substance addiction.

I've dealt with substance abuse a lot. I still sometimes over medicate when I'm depressed. Having been to rehab a few times and detox more than 6 times, I will say that AA and NA was initially presented as the only solution, and after a few years of giving both a fair shake, I dislike 12 step programs very much. There are many options if you really want to quit; don't lose hope and have faith that there's no single solution. I eventually got well on my own and by working with a pdoc who was not adamant about AA being the only answer.

Good luck...
