2 Prescriptions for clonazepam in the same month?

Posted by schleprock on March 14, 2013, at 21:21:53

Would a typical pharmacy fill 2 separate prescriptions for clonazepam (a common benzodiazepine) in the same month, one paid for out of pocket, the other under medicare. I ask because it seems I can't up the dosage under medicare, and need to have some emergency pills if I can't make it to my pdoc.

I think it depends on state law. When I moved away from one place a few years ago, I was able to fill a bunch of scrips/refills at once, as long as insurance wasn't paying for it. I ended up getting a gigantic bottle with more clonazepam than you could shake a stick at. Here, however, I don't think they can fill more than a month in a month's time, insurance or no, because it's a controlled substance. So I think the answer will depend on where you live, and the best way to answer is to ask some local pharmacists.

In my case I had like six months' worth of refills because I was moving away and the doctor gave me a goodly supply to last me till I found a new doctor in my new area. You can make up a similar scenario if you want to ask them over the phone. Naturally some of them will be suspicious that you are up to something bad, but I don't think they have discretion over it, it probably just depends on state law.

That said, I have encountered pharmacies that refused "as a matter of store policy" to sell codeine cough syrup over the counter(without a scrip), despite it being legal under state law for adults, which is why I recommend asking at several pharmacies, not just one.

I don't understand why can't up doseage under medicare unless the script is written for a lower dose to be taken. I have my doc write for higher dose and this way get sometimes four months worth for one month of useage? High high is the dose? Phillipa

Starting this year, benzos under medicare require pre-authorization. My Pdoc insists that the dosage cannot be increased beyond what was authorized!

If they act up, get them to phone your doctor for permission to fill the second script, or, otherwise, just go to a different pharmacy
