I had same experience as you, I went into the er with extreme anxiety, high blood pressure, out of my mind, very, very agitated. They put ativan in my iv,and my hubby said it was 2 seconds later, and I was completely calmed and normal. I do remember it as a "miracle". The relief was so great, and I slept for the first time in a month.

Had it IM twice and yes it worked well and fast first time had felt relaxed. Lasted quite a while. I'm guessing this wouldn't happen today too many years on benzos. Phillipa

I've never had it in an IV but I can think of a couple instances where I checked myself in that they should've given me one. For some reason, the hospitals here in Louisiana are very anti-ativan compared to the ones out in San Fran. I've had an ativan Rx for years and really save it for my worst cases of panic/anxiety, so when I ask for it it's because I really need it. My last inpatient stay here I asked for some and was denied with a curt, "We aren't an ativan hospital." I really had to fight tooth and nail to be "allowed" to take my medication in a social setting that is pretty much pure torture for someone who lives alone with her cat and rarely leaves the house.
My last 90 pill ativan Rx lasted me nine months and the Dr joked with me that I am using way too much of it and she wasn't sure she should give me another script. ;)
So yeah, I wish they were more about giving ativan IVs if you show up so anxious/nervous/out of your mind with tension.

Youre not alone, sadly hospitals,at least mine are actualy trying to do away with benzos,i dont understand i mean they have withstood the test of time as fairly safe since most of them have been around since the 70`s thats far better then all the problems i.e lawyer commercials on tv about the ssris and the problems that are starting to appear.
Also in jail, you are NOT ALLOWED BENZOS AT ALL,i was a special case and the judge deemed my meds not be changed, and everyone was envious that i had a benzo to take and again when i say no one i mean no one.

I dont believe Id feel a thing now from ativan either. I'll never forget that relief...I felt that sense of serenity the first time I took klonopin too,and I never raise my dose now looking for that because I know that it is temporary. I still feel that anxiety is controlled, you just dont get that euphoria-definately dont want to go down that road.

Gadchik so what do you think they do for us now? Just our brains are used to it? Medicaire just started paying for benzos first time ever they are losing their stigma. As the found the atypical antipsychotics caused to many medical problems in the elderly defined as over 60 0r 65 so now besides other problems I'm elderly. So benzos are again going to become popular and the others will go out. The new health care plan makes this possible as money saving long term. P

I've never gotten euphoria from ativan - I must be doing it wrong! lol
I did used to get it when I would take xanax for severe panic attacks, like an almost immediate rush. I was super careful with that stuff. Ativan just chills me out when I can't control my own mind/body reaction to stuff. I have noticed since I've been treating my panic for a good eight years now with ativan that I need it less because I am so responsive to that state and take care of it immediately. It's like my body has learned somehow that I'm going to take care of it and not put it in situations I can't handle.
I read a study once that said that people who take benzos for anxiety are less inclined to become addicted to them and tend to use them appropriately as directed. I think a lot of times people lose sight of that in the "war on drugs", that there are those of us who really need these medications to function.
Best,
Cat
