Remeron augmentation of SSRI

Posted by joe schmoe on March 13, 2013, at 17:25:43

Curious if anyone has tried Remeron augmentation of an SSRI. I am taking 20 mg Celexa. I would like to get more libido and sexual sensation, but I don't want to be doped/sedated during the workday, nor to get fat.

Is there a useful dose of Remeron that doesn't space you out, or give you the munchies?

For some reason I have never had a pdoc recommend Remeron as an augmentation agent, though they've suggested other things like Wellbutrin (which made me horribly anxious).

Hi Joe,

From my research on Remeron it has a long list of possible side effects - treatments I try to avoid except as a last resort. My last inpatient stay the head psychiatrist was very insistent that I go on Remeron, despite my concerns about its side effects and insisted that I try it for a couple nights. I tried the lowest dose and it was one of the worst meds I have ever tried. I felt like there was a hole where my brain should be. I couldn't form thoughts, I had difficulty communicating, I just sort of wandered around in a zombie haze. Aside from all of that, even on a weight gain basis alone I don't know what he was thinking in prescribing that for me, but it is very much a "doctor knows best" sort of hospital and he never did fully explain himself to me.

That said, I have very strong and often inexplicable reactions to psych meds that are atypical, so I am sure there are others who it has helped a great deal. I'm just not one of them. Wikipedia notes that there are two studies which found Imipramine superior to Remeron, and for once it does list the sources in case you want to check that out. Thought it might be worth mentioning.

Good luck with your med journey,
Cat

Joe at one time took 15mg of remeron as supposed to help with sleep. I felt absolutely nothing good or bad so I just stopped it after a month. I still have a full bottle never opened under the sink. Oh and didn't feel more hungry or gain weight that month. Phillipa

I have combined Remeron with a lot of meds, including most of the SSRIs. Remeron is good for augmenting SSRIs, it has properties that counteracts nausea and GI problems, it increases libido and often reverses the sexual side effects from SSRIs. And it's good for sleep. Not to forget its antidepressant qualities which puts it in the top.
Not so useful for anxiety, atleast not for me, but I don't longer feel the antihistamine effect either. I have taken Remeron for a very long time at most doses.
To start with, 15-30mg should do it.

At low doses (7.5mg and 15mg) remeron will act as a strong anti-histamine and will be useful as a sleeping agent, although drowsiness that stays well until the next day is common.

At doses 30mg and upwards remeron will increase noradrenaline and function quite differently, the sedation will be less pronounced and should go away after continuous use.

I've not heard about any SSRI augmentations, but remeron is famous for combining exceedingly well with SNRI meds like Effexor and Cymbalta. (It's also earned a reputation for being called "california rocket fuel" when taken together with a SNRI).
