I have been taking 300 mgs a day of Lamotrigine. I have been tapering off of it and take none as of today. Has anyone had any side-effects from ceasing Lamotrigine? I had a really BAD week last week but my doctor says it must mean I need the Lamotrigine. However, I feel so much better today than yesterday and last week. So, could there be a withdrawal effect? Thanks!

I was on Lamotrigine for stabilizing my mood not bi-polar or seizure.

I had a terrible month when I quit lamotrigine and moved to nardil -- because being on lamotrigine had been entirely ineffective and precipitated a depressive episode.

I didn't have any ill effects when taking Lamotrigine but when tapering off, especially when down to 25 mg a day, I was depressed, tired, easily angered, very moody, feeling out of control. But, my doctor said there are no withdrawal symptoms with this drug. He said it could mean I Need the drug. However, today, 1st day with no medicine, the previous complaints are gone but am now having insomnia. I'm confused!

I've not heard of it causing insomnia. What other meds are you currently taking? Give it bit of time. What would happen if you took 20mg as a test to see if you need it and that the withdrawal did cause this? Phillipa

I agree with there being no withdrawal syndrome btw: I didn't even taper off. I was perfectly fine. The only side effect I got was slight fogginess on dosage increased. It had no effect on mood whatsoever -- effectively ruling out bipolar II for me. (Thank god, I'm sick of people suggesting that)

I'm so glad to hear it! Good for you. Who knows, I may actually need it. If so, that's ok with me; better than being on edge and ready to fly out of control. Thanks, widget
