Desipramine vs Wellbutrin

Posted by alchemy on February 27, 2013, at 18:57:26

I've been on and off Wellbutrin for a large part of my life. I'm not real positive if it helps. I recently went off of it for a failed parnate trial and am thinking of adding it back on (at least for weight issues).
However, i remember once my dr had me switch it for desipramine. I'm not sure, but I think I liked the desipramine a little better except for those wonderful tca side effects (dry mouth, etc.)
There isnt a lot of info out there about how desipramine works. I like that its involved with dopamine. Does anyone have insight for a good comparison? I need help with mood, motivation, anhedonia (etc).

Desipramine is a relatively clean noradrenalin reuptake inhibitor

Bupropion inhibits the reuptake of noradrenalin and to a lesser extent dopamine

Both are good antidepressants, which one is best for you is a very individual thing, some people will find one better, some the other, and some will find them about the same.

You could combine either of them with either Zoloft or Lexapro to add some seretonin into the mix and try and enhance your response

Desipramine has more affinity for noradrenaline than Wellbutrin and less affinity for dopamine. For anhedonia, dopamine is the key neurotransmitter. Have you tried Mirapex or Ropinirole? Scopalamine is another novel treatment for depression.

Thanks Eric. I tried Amantadine which is also used for parkinsons with no positive results. And my pdoc was very hesitant to give it to me. I may have even tried to get him to give me Mirapex. Is there much ofa difference between the two? Atypicals makes me more depressed and agitated. Is it something I could take with wellbutrin? How bad is the sedation?
Thanks!
