The Australian Governments TGA (Theraputic Goods Administration, our version of the FDA) has put a proposal to the Drug Scheduling Committee to move benzos from Schedule 4 (Prescription onlt) to Schedule 8 (Controlled Drug), the same class as morphine and Oxycontin.
Australias drug scheduling is as follows
S 0 - can be sold in any shop or supermarket
S2 - can only be sold in a pharmacy
S3 - can only be sold in a pharmacy, and the sale must be made by a qualified pharmacist, not an assistant
S4 - Prescription only
S8 - controlled drugs, narcotics (exccept codeine) morphine, cocaine, amphetamines, methylphenidate
Putting benzos in the same class as morphine and amphetamines seems a bit of an over kill to me - I'm hoping that the independent Drug and Poison Scheduling Committee will have the sense to see that

Strange as here medicaire which kind of sets the classification of meds has finally approved benzos and dilantin for insurance by medicaire. Evidently from what the pharmacist told us when I asked why my benzos were so inexpensive. The government found that giving antipsychotics caused so many medical problems metabolic, weight gain all leading to other problems like heart disease from the weight that finally they are deemed safe which I always knew they were. Benzos are a controlled substance in the U.S. They can't be sent through the mail, at least in my state (so you can't fill prescriptions through mail order for example). In my state they have to be signed for each time, I have to show a driver's license, the whole nine yards (in addition to a prescription of course). The RX number on each bottle starts with a C to designate controlled substance. They are commonly tested for in drug screens.
I have also noticed that pharmacies will give me an automatic call every 30 days to refill other meds like citalopram or allergy meds, but they will never give me a reminder to refill a benzo, which I suspect is caused by their controlled substance status.

Still are but not the docs are not afraid to prescribe them. The government deemed them safer than atypical antipsycotics. Dilantin is now also covered by medicaire a barbituate. Medicaire would never pay for my benzos and now they do. $8.70 for a month of xanax & a month of valium total of both. Phillipa

I don't think Dilantin is a barbiturate.
I hope that we now will find morphine as easy to find as benzos.
No harder to give up.
