Antipsychotic side effects and level of psychosis

Posted by firemonkey on February 6, 2013, at 19:51:31

Are you more likely to experience side effects from antipsychotics the less severe your acute/chronic psychosis is (ie body reacting to something it doesn't strongly need) or is it very much an individual thing regardless of acute/chronic severity?

I wonder why(judging by comments made) some have seemingly horrendous reactions to them and yet others(like me) have relatively mild ones. With those with high levels of side effects often being more vocal.

My guess is that is based on individual brain and/or body chemistry, as there are agents in the medications (coloring, binders, etc.) that do not work to control the symptoms of psychosis (or maina, depression, etc.). Also, my experience with side effects has been mild while my symptoms (depression) are severe. There are, however, folks on this forum much more knowledgeable about psychopharmacology than I who may offer a different (and, perhaps, more accurate) point of view.

I'm not sure about APs, but one might also want to pose the same question about benzos, seeing as how they seem to be typically abused by "normal" people, especially Xanax, which is apparently some sort of crime to be in possession of.

You should view the following story and pass your own judgment over whether or not this type of behavior could be the result of the use of Xanax in the case of a non-neurotic:

Could be the result of just a person for whatever reason. Looking for attention? I've been on benzos as everyone knows for over 40 years and have yet to flip the finger and giggle over anything. I probably should as she's having more fun than me. Looks like her inhibitions are down. Antipsychotics can't tolerate. Phillipa
