Nardil users - Need advice

Posted by chris2011 on January 28, 2013, at 22:26:27

I was prescribed Nardil 15mg for social anxiety, ocd, and depression and started taking it three days ago. So far I'm having major side-effects, namely difficulty thinking, concentrating, planning, and severe apathy (all executive functions?). I know it's normal to have SE's with any med, and it probably sounds like I'm panicking, but the aforementioned SE's are particularly annoying right now as my Spring semester classes just started this week. I can't get through a page or two in my books today. What I need to know is how long this fuzzy thinking/inability to absorb information will last. I can't deal with this for more than a week. I've tried all other primary and secondary meds along with several off-label use meds to treat my conditions but nothing has been effective, with the exception of Klonopin, which only numbs me out emotionally. If anybody can relate to the side-effects I'm dealing with and give me an idea of how long they might last or how to possibly counter them I'd appreciate it. I've had generalized social anxiety, ocd, and depression for over 20 years now and desperately need relief from it, but not at the cost of being able to think, concentrate, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I've been on Nardil for 4 years (currently on 90mg, although it has completely pooped out after years of being really helpful for depression and anxiety/OCD)

For the first few weeks (maybe a little longer) it made me VERY lethargic, which affected thinking/concentrating/etc. But after pushing through the lethargy it finally went away. Although you haven't mentioned lethargy in particular - are you experiencing that as well?

I hope this wears off for you as it did for me - it is known to be particularly effective for depression w/anxiety. (I'm also on Namenda which has helped the OCD as well)

Thanks for the response. I'm feeling somewhat lethargic throughout the day but not sure if that's the main reason I'm experiencing the cognitive difficulties, although it could very well be. It would explain the sluggish thinking and apathy. The difficulty focuing side-effect seems like ADD where the more you try to focus the harder it gets. I'm going to try to push through this as I know nardil can be a life-saver.

Your concern is understandable. I have been on Nardil a few times. I still get the type of cognitive side effects you describe early in treatment. Of course, that is no guarantee that these things will dissipate for you, but I would suggest that it is worth staying on Nardil a few more days before making any decisions. You might want to split the pills and go with 7.5 mg/day if you don't feel that you can function at work.

Good luck.

Thanks. I appreciate the input. I split the dosage to 7.5 last night and think I'll give it till at least the end of this week before making any decisions.
