On my most recent and most pleasant (really!) inpt. stay, the pdoc I was assigned to said that I am most likely a 'fast metabolizer' and that is why I develop tolerance to most drugs very quickly. He told me the psychiatric community is starting to recognize this and are treatming many such fast metabolizers with supra-therapeutic doses of many drugs just because the patient's body eliminates them so quickly. I'm wondering if any of you babblers who stay 'in the know' of all things psychiatric have heard of this phenomonom, and also what it would mean for someone like me who is a supposed fast metabolizer. Thanks for any info you can provide!

It's come up before doesn't it mean you eliminate the med faster so need more frequent and higher totalled together doses. Is there a test for it? Phillipa

I actually would like to know if there is a test for it, too.

A psychiatrist I was seeing 7 or 8 years ago said I was a fast metabolizer and, if I remember right, she said I've never seen anyone on dosages as high as you take.
A year later I asked her if she would up my dose of Adderall. She said are you selling this stuff? She wrote the script but put 'drug seeking behavior' in my file.
I didn't know that till my current doc told me.
I'm going to be blunt so hold your ears...I hate that f*ck*ng bitch. Not just for that, there was other stuff that went on. Totally unprofessional.
She's the only doc of any kind that's yelled at me, more than once. Since I couldn't kick her *ss I should have kicked her smarmy husbands *ss in the next office.

I wish I had filed with the Medical Board, but I didn't.
Injury to insult I was paying full pop. They didn't take insurance. I've bitched about her here several times.
What she really didn't like was that I would question her based on stuff I learned here and other places. I never said I was a doctor but what's wrong with being an informed patient?
Most of the time she was fine and a good doc..just don't piss her off.

Its possible to be a fast or slow metaboliser of certain classes of drugs (for example you might be a fast or slow metaboliser of trixcyclic antideopressants, or a fast metaboliser of benzodiazepines, or a fast metaboliser of penicillins) but i think being a fast metaboliser of EVERY drug is a bit of a stretch, given the huge range of metabolic processes involved.

Interesting topic. My now "former" pdoc gave me the DNA test which is supposed to show which psych drugs your body best metabolizes based on your liver enzymes (that's kinda how it works, I think). I'm curious to see the results, which I'll be passing along to a new pdoc.
I'll keep you guys posted if interested.
