My relative's pdoc recommended he switch from Zyprexa to Saphris. The lower dosage he started with worked OK but he was still taking Zyprexa. A month later he switched him to a higher dosage of Saphris and had him go cold turkey on Zyprexa. He got zombied out and had to go back on his full Zyprexa after a few days. I don't think cold turkey after 7 years on Zyprexa was a good decision. What do you all think?

I take both Saphris 10 mg and Zyprexa 20 mg. No adverse effects. I've been on this combination for the past five months or so. I have schizoaffective disorder and depression. I take Cymbalta 60 mg for depression.

Thanks for reply, I think that gives me some background on the question. It occurred several months ago I think Saphris might be worth another try.

After 7 years, i think a fairly slow cross taper would indeed be in order
Why was the switch recomended?

The switch was made because of lingering complaints about Zyprexa side effects such as difficulty swallowing plus the recommendation of a new and possibly better med. He was taking 5 mg for a month prior to upping it to 10 mg. He did OK on the 5mg but was beseiged by problems after dropping Zyprexa including flu symptoms and some kind of zone out attack. He was better less than a week after continuing Zyprexa but it scared him badly and I believe it was the cold turkey not the Saphris.

if he still wants to change, I'd suggest changing over slowly, a quater of a tablet a week, over 4 weeks, so thatt he body has a chance to adjust,
