Anyone taking Doxepin? what do you think so far?

Posted by adela on January 14, 2013, at 14:23:17

Prescribed Vistaril 25 mg. risperdal 1.5mg
Depakote 750 at night/500 day
cogentin
doxepin

can anyone tell me what the thinking is behind the cocktail of this choice? I am concerned tht the cogentin is to counter act the effects of the risperdal. then I worry that the risperdal is not right.
I have a 4:30 est call with docs. What kinds of questions should I be asking about this mixture of drugs? isn't there anything better than risperdal?

Same questions you have asked here. Do you have a Pdoc you see in person? Phillipa

What are you taking Depakote for? Doxepin is an industrial-strength antihistamine, a TCA -antidepressant and anxiolytic- it is also anticholinergic as benztropine so you may get too much anticholinergic effects which could be troublesome.

This would be is easier if I knew the rationale behind the chosen meds.

First of all, what you taking your meds for?
Cogentin = benztropine is an anticholinergic agent and reduces EPS induced by strong DA-antagonists like Risperdal, so them two makes sense, if you have problems with EPS. They do not counteract each other.

I hardly believe you would need Vistaril if you are taking doxepin! Both are antihistamines.

If this combo works for you, great, if it is a new one, you and your pdoc should carefully revise it!

Best of luck,
tensor

I think doxapin is a decent medication. What are you using the risperdal for? (sleep / anxiety?)

The doxapin might replace risperdal / cogentin (if you are just using it for sleep / anxiety).

Doxepin works but its a bit of a dinosour, mirtazapine could probably do everything doxepin can and more, with fewer side effects.

If you were taking doxepin or mirtazapine, the hydroxyzine would almost certainly be unnssecery
