PARNATE questions PLEASE HELP!

Posted by Trevpr on January 13, 2013, at 0:21:52

Hello, I've been here periodically mostly with questions about Parnate. I haven't tried it yet, but plan to very soon. If anyone has any experience with Parnate or other MAOIs I would really appreciate a response! :)

I suffer from strong anhedonia, lack of libido, and emotional blunting (which I guess are symptoms of major depression, but they are my only symptoms).

1.) Can Parnate or other MAOIs restore emotions and libido while getting rid of anhedonia?

2.) Is Parnate like other AD's where you really have to look hard to see if there are any improvements, or is it really obvious?

3.) I have the inability to feel naturally induced feelings of euphoria. I have heard of start-up euphoria on Parnate/Nardil, but that it fades away. Does that mean I'll never feel really happy/euphoric ever again??

4.) Can ECT clear this up?

5.) Any other suggestions for anhedonia, emotional blunting, and no libido?

I've not taken an Maoi but many have. Seems to be a slack in posting right now. I'm hoping someone with parnate experience sees this and answers you question. Phillipa

When i was looking at other peoples experiences with parnate. I couldnt believe how many were positive. There were some who found relief even after decades. I also noticed the immediate euphoric effect that faded. But it seemed to me to have a good track record.
I also remember it being compared to ect as they were both quick and last resort options in some peoples opinions. Which of course makes no sense for parnate to be considered as a last resort. So in my opinion, go for the.parnate. unfortunately it didnt help me, but you should still try it.
I did find ect to be very helpful. It gave me the only happy period of time that i was happy. Unfortunately it faded after about a month. I have tried it since then, and did not have to great results i did before. Otherwise, i would be doing it again and try a better maintenance schedule. It scares me, and the short-term memory loss sucks. Other people have wished they had never done it. I would still recommend trying the parnate first.

Parnate would likely be a very usefull drug for you, it is good for server melancholic depression, good for anhedonia, and often works where other drugs have failed.

Well worth a shot.

Insomnia can be rough, discuss a suitable sleep med with your doctor before you start taking it.

I take parnate but can't really answer your question, since I had severe atypical depression. It helped a lot at first, less over time. I don't know why it's seen as a last resort. MAOIs aren't nearly as dangerous as people make them out to be, while ECT really is dangerous and didn't do anything for me except kill my memory for a couple of months.

Parnate sure couldn't hurt. The worst that could happen is it doesn't work and you suffer some start-up side effects (like postural hypotension). I've been tapering off it recently and have no withdrawal effects. So it's certainly worth a try.

I don't have any specific answers but I am supposed to be starting Parnate soon also.

1) Yeah my sex drive increased while on Parnate (or at least didn't decrease). Seemed to restore emotions too.

2) It was very obvious for me. I felt many of the mood elevating effects almost immediately, and a secondary antidepressant effect a few weeks later.

3) I felt more euphoria at times than before Parnate

Not sure about the others.
