FDA approves Deep TMS for depression

Posted by Hugh on January 11, 2013, at 11:34:32

The TMS currently available in the US only penetrates about 1.5 cm into the brain. This new Deep TMS from Brainsway penetrates much deeper -- 6 or 7 cm, so it can target the brain's reward system directly, instead of indirectly with the old TMS system. Deep TMS has been available in Europe for three years.

I wonder if this is the same FDA approval different article I received. So this is for treatment resistant depression after all else has failed? Phillipa

This is great news!

Medicare might be impelled to cover it now.

If I hadn't responded to medication, I would have tried TMS a year ago. I still may if I reach a sticking-point. Perhaps TMS would accelerate the healing process.

The FDA approved Deep TMS just this week. I don't think a person would have to fail "all else" in order to qualify. When TMS was approved by the FDA in 2008, it was for treatment-resistant depression. This new Deep TMS is also for treatment-resistant depression. Maybe someone can weigh in on just how many antidepressants a person is supposed to fail before trying TMS.

It could potentially treat mood regulatory disorders in addition to depression.

That would be great!

Have you encountered any literature that would gives evidence to this? It sounds feasible. Can you imagine if BPD were to respond to TMS so as to reduce mood dysregulation and allow for greater a penetration by psychotherapy? BPD people are truly tormented by their mood swings and the endless shifting of self-image.

It's getting to be that time...

Clinical trials are underway that use Deep TMS to treat autism, ADHD in adults, OCD, bipolar, schizophrenia, stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Tourette's, and addictions.

Does anyone know how much this procedure might cost in USD? I see its been used in the UK for 3 or more years with very good results, but do not see any prices.

Prices I've seen are $200-300 a session. That's for the currently available form of TMS. It might be cheaper than that in some parts of the country.

Thanks. Wow, with the amount of procedures needed, that would get expensive fast! I have an HSA medical account with a high deductible.

thnx for posting this info.

i have not heard very good things about the older tms, but this sounds more promising.

Hi John,

You're welcome. I'd think it would probably take at least a month and maybe a few months before Deep TMS is up and running in the US. I'll keep an eye out for it and post any news.

This report is great reading. It basically says that Deep TMS is as effective as ECT but it will work in 2 weeks time (instead of 4) WITHOUT the cognitive SEs, the need for hospitalization and all the drama involved with ECT.

I wrote them an e-mail and even though it has been approved here in Europe, the only place to get a treatment is apparently in Israel, dont know when it will be available in the rest of Europe...
