So I am on Effexxor, I have hypocholesterol (290 total cholesterol) and mild hypthyroidism. The docs wanted to put me on statins which causes memory loss and synthroid for the thyroid. I am taking the synthroid but I refuse to take the statin. Effexor rare side effects: high cholesterol and hypothyroidism. Of course I can't clinically porve it but I bet that Effexor caused this. Doctors are clueless.

I take synthroid but needed before any antidepressant. Personally I wouldn't take a statin either. Below 200 is normal and 290 isn't that high. Overweight or don't excercise? As both can cause high cholesterol as well as high fat diet. And some people have liver's that just produce a lot of cholesterol. Anyone else in family with same problem? Of course it's always possible that effexor caused it. Weigh the pros and cons and then decide. Phillipa

Why do you rerfuse the statin?
provided you stick to a lowish dose (say 20mg of Zocor/Simvastatin or 10mg of Lipitor) and take a CoQ!0 supplement, side effects are extremely unlikely, and it could add years to your life.
