Abilify / aripiprazole experiences? information?

Posted by henryo on December 7, 2012, at 4:31:54

I am going to start taking Abilify and have been instructed to start half a dose 2.5mg, for 7 days then step up to 5mg daily. I always want to know if a medication causes weigh gain or sexual side effects, because those two things are pretty depressing all by themselves. Has anybody had wonderful happy experiences with Abilify / aripiprazole ?? Thank you.

I have been on Abilify on and off for the last 3-4 years. I have tried a lot of other meds but keep returning to Abilify because it is the only med that has worked more that briefly. I am taking 5 mg/day.

My diagnosis is dysthymia with atypical features (overeating and oversleeping). Abilify has helped a lot on my mood, given me much more initiative and made me more relaxed.

I have not noticed any side effects. I have actually managed to loose weight while on Abilify. Sexually I find it neutral.

I hope this can help you.

Abilify worked like magic for me in pulling me out of severe depression. Unfortunately, it made me gain weight rapidly. But apparently it does not usually cause weight gain. Can't hurt to try. You'll know whether or not you're susceptible to weight gain within a couple of weeks. No other side effects for me.

Thank you. Did you ever take Abilify in conjunction with other meds?

Yes. I took it with lexapro. I don't think lexapro did much for me, actually. The abilify (and other AAPs) had this dramatic effect on my mood. But I couldn't continue them because of the weight gain. I gained over 50 pounds during my experimentation with AAPs. I didn't eat more. I actually ate the same and exercised more, since I wasn't depressed. But I gained 2-3 pound a week anyway.

As I said, if you are susceptible to it, the weight gain is rapid and immediate. You will know within a week or two. I had no other side effects from AAPs. I wasn't even aware I was taking them. Just like taking a vitamin every day. I had no withdrawal effects when I stopped.

So, it can't hurt to try.

It gave me akathisia. Stopped it because of this. Akathisia from Abilify luckily went away.
