dr said ive reached the end - just find fun stuff

Posted by alchemy on December 6, 2012, at 16:20:42

Seriously, i am suppose to find things to be passionate about because med trials are going no where? This guy found me in the hospital 5 yrs ago, has given me ect, and knows i think about suicide every day.
I struggle doing things and dont enjoy anything. But i need to find some "passions". Talk about kicking me down further.

Just to clarify...i am suppose to find things to be passionate about because med trials are going no where? This guy found me in the hospital 5 yrs ago, has given me ect, and knows i think about suicide every day.

Frustration and a sense of failure can lead some doctors to say some pretty hurtful and counterproductive things. Don't take it personally. He was wrong. Perhaps it is time for you to go for a consultation and a second opinion. I would still encourage you to use all of what you have been given to work with to fight the depression and make the most of every moment you can. You probably do this already. Try to remain positive and constructive in your approach. You can do what you can do. If you could do more, you would.

Maybe he was just trying to say that you need to find some interests outside of your illness - i think we all can get a bit too wrapped up in it at times, spending too much time thinking, reading and googling about what aills us.

I agree with SLS though, I think a 2nd opinion would be worthwhile if your first doc thinks you're aproaching the end of the road

What meds have you tried? Have you tried

Nardil +/- nortriptyline

Parnate +/- nortriptyline

Welbutrin + an SSRI

Nortriptyline + an SSRI

Effexor 300mg/day + Remeron

Clomipramine

an atypical antipsychotic

If there are any of these you haven tried, then try them!

You might like to read this:

I second (third?) the suggestion of seeing another psychiatrist.

Thank you papillion! That made me feel better. It is very true in mainstrain medicine when they say that if u dont respond then it is just in ur head. That is becoming less frequent as medicine and our medical understanding evolves.

This sort of thing is especially prevalent among social workers as well.

No medication options because she said the other one would know my history and responses. She is a psychiatrist and asked if i was taking a multivitamin. Are u stupid? Of course i do. Plus fish oil, nac, extra vit d. Not to mention trying every other supplement and natural remedy.
I think i had more of a nervous breakdown when my other dr told me that at this point it is just going to be trying to focus on finding fun stuff, also what this othee pdoc told me. I find nothing fun, i dont feel like doing anything, sometimes its painful to do anything that people think is "fun".

That is no good; you can absolutely tell her everything she needs to know about your meds and responses.

If you haven't already, you need to locate a major medical center with a good psychiatry department and get an appointment for a consultation with someone who's really up on both the older pharmacopeia and new research. You may need to wait a bit if they are very booked up, but it will probably be worth it.

I have been for consulting opinions on several occasions. Each time, I walked away with options. If you bring a written list of your meds history, reactions, symptoms, etc., a new doctor should be able to get the picture pretty quickly, give at least a preliminary opinion on your diagnosis, and start to think through some ideas.

And you need the psychiatrist who treats you regularly to not throw in the towel on you. Do you have any other options for local psychiatrists?

Good luck.
