Amlodipen + Nardil bad reaction. How long?

Posted by gilmourr on November 3, 2012, at 21:45:55

I took amlodipen which caused headaches and nausea.

I then restarted 45 mg Nardil the next day after being off for 14 days to resume treatment which caused brain zaps, anxiety, a lot of hotness in my face and dizziness.

I've never experienced what I have by going back on 45 mg of Nardil from 0. So I think amlodipen is somehow responsible.

How long should I wait for Amlodipine to clear my system to a significant point? The half life is 30-50 hours (my headdache is just going away now I think) and I took one dose on Thursday @ 8 pm.

hi gilmourr, i hope you are feeling better. for the amlodipine to be out of your system almost completely, you have to wait 3-4 half lives, preferably 4. so that's 120 - 200hrs, based on the half life you gave me. i don't have a calculator, but seems like that would be 5-8 days.

and i just have to say i found your post very interesting...b/c i was having the same reactions: anxiety, flushing in my face, and dizziness...and I'm on amlodipine too! I'm gonna do a search and see if anyone's ever reported an interaction between nardil and amlodipine. i'll let you know what i find out. in the meantime, take care :)

Hi Gilmourr,

I checked it out and there is indeed an interaction between your MAOI (Nardil) and your Ca2+-Channel Blocker (Amlodipine) Nardil inhibits the metabolism of Amlodipine, thus causing increased blood levels of Amlodipine. And the symptoms you describe go right along with CCB toxicity. If you're gonna stay on the Nardil, you'll have to get your doc to lower the dose of the Amlodipine, or better yet, switch to a different class of antihypertensives - I won't make a recommendation here b/c I don't know your full medical history. But your doc will know. Just be sure to get him or her to understand that there IS documented info on the interaction between your Nardil and your Amlodipine.

And thanks!!! If you hadn't posted this topic, I might never have known that the flushing, etc that I sometimes get is from my amlodipine! I'm seeing my doc next week and things are gonna change :)

Thanks for the answer, I guess I hadn't rechecked this post because I was so sick from the amlodipine.

It lasted about 5-6 days like you said and then I was able to start Nardil. Good to hear that it helped solve your issue or at least question about flushing. But yeah, very uncomfortable taking amlodipine. Just headaches for days, fever, extreme coldness, dizziness, heart was doing weird things.

If amlodipine levels were increased in my blood does amlodipine also inhibit Nardil so that higher levels of Nardil were in my blood?

Because I've resumed Nardil for the last 15 days and it just doesn't feel the same.
